Is Aidan politically neutral or not?

Saw a post about religious names and neutral names in Northern Ireland. I live in Belfast and while I was raised in the Catholic religion I'm an atheist and plan to send my children to an integrated school and allow them to make their own religious decisions when older.
I love the name Aidan for a boy and feel it's pretty neutral having known a few from England and America as well as actors. But now I'm wondering if you would strongly associate it with being a Catholic/Irish?

I know there are quite a few spellings but id go with Aidan myself.

It's a nickname for transgender men. It's a very commonly chosen name when transitioning from female to male.

I've come across this in several places.

Mrsjayy · 21/11/2023 19:16

surely if you live in Belfast you will know how neutral Aidan is ? the only Aidans i know are RC , I'm in Central Scotland where your religion was also a thing. granted not as much as NI obviously.

I've never heard this in my life but good to know!

Not neutral no.

Gcsunnyside23 · 21/11/2023 19:35

Nope not neutral

UnimaginableWindBird · 21/11/2023 19:39

I grew up in a mixed area of Belfast and my initial baseline assumption about an Aidan would be that he was Catholic. Or at any rate, certain not from the sort of family who thought of themselves as Protestant.

LegoLegoParrot · 21/11/2023 19:42

I grew up in a Protestant/Unionist area and no, it's not a name I'd ever have come across to be honest.
I don't think I met any Aidans until uni actually!

MaloneMeadow · 21/11/2023 19:44

I’m from Belfast and it’s certainly more commonly used in catholic community

mathanxiety · 21/11/2023 19:59

Definitely RC.

Oscar is an old Irish name that is also fairly trendy and found in many other European cultures, if you're looking for suggestions.

WindowsSmindows · 21/11/2023 20:06

Aidan for trans men? Never heard that.

Liv999 · 21/11/2023 20:10

Aidan is a very Irish/Catholic name, definitely not neutral, its my Dhs name!

Firebird83 · 21/11/2023 21:33

Not neutral

yesyesitsaparkingone · 21/11/2023 21:43

Rory and Patrick would be neutral where I am. Aidan probably not, but does it matter? It’s not a massive political statement, it’s just ‘more likely to be catholic’.

So sorry that we still live in times when we have to think about such things.

Elvisis · 21/11/2023 21:43

Thanks I still love the name and will most likely use it, Oscar is nice too but I always associate it with sesame street lol

Actually, not sure if Patrick and Rory are neutral completely but certainly enough middle class rugby type protestant boys are called that.

Most apostles names pretty neutral- James Paul Peter etc

Weirdly there seem to be thousands of English Matthews and Matts but not many Irish ones that spring to mind!

TakeMe2Insanity · 21/11/2023 21:46

The only Aidens I know are North African in origin. Very common there.

yesyesitsaparkingone · 21/11/2023 21:46

You should, it’s a lovely name.

ColleenDonaghy · 21/11/2023 21:47

Not neutral in NI.

I like it, but it's often lumped in with the much-maligned Jayden, Kayden etc names on here (which you may or may not care about, just letting you know in case it does bother you).

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/11/2023 21:47

I’m in England so maybe not relevant but I wouldn’t assume Catholic. I also wouldn’t assume Irish as it’s fairly popular here after some celebrities called Aidan. I know it is Irish but English people are using it too.

theduchessofspork · 21/11/2023 21:48

Not neutral in NI no.

theduchessofspork · 21/11/2023 21:49

Adam maybe?

Hotchocolatemousse · 21/11/2023 21:51

Aiden is also a popular name in the Muslim community so I wouldn't regard it as completely Catholic. How about Adam if you wanted something politically neutral.

Reallynotoverreacting · 21/11/2023 21:52

Owen would be pretty neutral but definitely not Aidan.

calishire · 21/11/2023 21:52

Tbh I thought Aiden was welsh but maybe its spelt differently there

yellowlane · 21/11/2023 22:37
