Could Maggie feasibly be short for Marianne?

Loving the name Maggie but want a Sunday Best version. DH not keen on Margaret or Marguerite. Any more ideas?

I think it can be short for whatever you want. Some of my (posh) cousins have nicknames that have no relation to their real names at all.

Buckets · 12/03/2008 15:56

Oh yeah, Tiggy Legge-Bourke et al.

agree with babysinthegarden

other ideas:

magdalene
magdalena
margaron

My dd is Margot (middle name). Love it, love it, love it (note also my mn name ).

Also knew a Margareta once.

But babysinthegarden is right - go posh!

Maggie can be short for Margeaux (I think that's how it's spelt) or Margot.

Moomin · 12/03/2008 16:02

The two Mariannes I know are shortened to Maz and Mazzy. It's a pretty name and I guess you could shorten it to Maggie if you want - it's up to you.

Buckets · 12/03/2008 16:05

Good. Was thinking it might be a bit Scally/scouse street gang abbreviating Mari to Maggi/Magsi?

Marjolaine? (J is pronounced as zh, emphasis on last syllable). Actually I'm not sure if this is really a name, it's the name of a cake shop in my old home town . But I always thought it was pretty.

If you lie Maggie just name her Maggie.

Buckets · 12/03/2008 16:22

LOL Majolica.
Will def put Marianne/Maggie higher up my list. On the whole though I do prefer nicknames that have the same few letters at least as the main name, for simplicity's sake but I guess 2 aint a bad match.

I think personally that Maggie bears so resemblance to Marianne. You may as well call her "Sarah" if you're going for a Sunday name you'll never use. If you like Maggie then just call her that.

branflake81 · 12/03/2008 18:12

sorry, bears no resemblance

Buckets · 12/03/2008 19:40

But her Sunday name would be used, on paper and when I'm cross with her! I just think if you've only got a nickname, there's nowhere to hide, everyone is that intimate eg I wouldn't have wanted my teachers to call me by my nickname when I was younger. Gives you a bit of distance if you need it and lets people you like feel special.

It can be short for whatever you want it to be short for. Fgs who is anyone else to judge what you call your child, unless that is, you are asking whether people like a particular name......which, even though I know you didn't ask, I love both, they're lovely, go for it!

WanderingTrolley · 12/03/2008 19:45

I know a Maggie whose real name is Madeline.

Maxine?

loler · 13/03/2008 20:35

I love both and completely get the nickname thing. Couldn't really say why until read your last post.

Made me laugh as ds1 nickname is bucks short for Bucket short for Patrick!

MrsMattie · 14/03/2008 17:43

Just go for Maggie. Sunday best names are useless if yo don't actually like them. Give her a 'proper' middle name she can use if she grows up to hate Maggie.

My FIL's name is Henry but he gets called Sam for short so it's up to you.
