Torn between 2 names - help!!

Hello, I am torn between 2 names & would love peoples initial favourite without overthinking it. The names are Harlow & Sofia/Sophia. I love that Harlow is more unique & don't love that Sofia is so popular but it is very pretty. Opinions please. TIA

Either Sophia (in the old days traditionally So-FYE-ah in the UK ) or Sofia (So-FEE-ah) would be lovely. Very pretty names.

Harlow much less so. As a previous poster asked, have you ever been there? It's not a pretty town.

Also, re Harlow, many people will be reminded of the famous comment by Margot Asquith, the wife of a former prime minister. She allegedly made a rather nasty word-play joke about her name 'Margot' being pronounced 'Margo' to the famous platinum blonde early film star named Jean Harlow, referencing the old-fashioned name for sex-worker, which was 'harlot'. (ie Harlow = harlot).
The whole story - it's complicated - is here:

Calling a child Harlow would be like calling her/him Slough.

I'd go for Sophia.

Canwehaveaminute · 19/11/2023 18:52

Harlow reminds me of harlot

2chocolateoranges · 19/11/2023 18:53

Sophia is classic and timeless.

sofia is ok but you’d constantly have to spell it to people and Harlow sounds so harsh.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 19/11/2023 18:55

Don't pick Harlow 😬

Something can't be more unique, what you mean is more unusual. Harlow is a town in Hertfordshire. I recommend you pay a visit before using the name.
Sophia and Sofia are overused, but are pretty. The Sophia spelling is best.

I prefer Sophie too.

Edited

It’s in Essex, but the rest of your point is correct.

KirstenBlest · 19/11/2023 19:17

Yes, sorry, I know it's in Essex but because I was thinking 'It's like calling your DD Stevenage or Watford' I typed Hertfordshire. It is fairly close to the border.

cheleuh · 20/11/2023 12:49

Both Harlow and Sofia are lovely. I much prefer the Sofia spelling to Sophia though.

KirstenBlest · 20/11/2023 13:13

I'd be inclined to say Sofia like the capital city (SOFF-i -a, not So-FEE-a).
Both Harlow/Harlowe and Sofia/Sophia have the two spellings issue.

MsBea · 20/11/2023 13:19

This is mainstream middle-class mumsnet. Most here are going to vote for anything top 20, really.

Sophia is really pretty and strong. But very very popular.
I agree about Harlow being less than ideal as place names go.

How about Halo?
"Meaning: Divine aura
Popularity:1283. Origin:Greek. Meaning:Divine aura; Disc of the sun or moon. If you'd like a name that illuminates baby's angelic nature, Halo is a compelling contender. This ethereal title stems from the Greek halos, meaning “disc of the sun or moon,” entering the English language during the 16th century."

Or Serafina?
Or Solange?
Celeste?

I'm not sure if this post is a wind up or not.

Harlow is an appalling suggestion for a myriad of reasons. I hate to think what other names you considered if Harlow ended up in the top 2.

Sophia is a nice name. I visited Sofia once and although not as grim as Harlow it is not somewhere I would be naming a child after.

theduchessofspork · 20/11/2023 13:24

Sophia - it’s a lovely classic, and not as popular as it was. Sophie is also lovely and less common.

Harlow is a dump as PP says, it’s quite popular as a name at the moment so not unique - but it’s a faddy name that will date badly.

No point in Sofia spelling unless you have Italian heritage and want to mark that, it will just be annoying for her.

Saskia, Serena, Selina, Sabrina might be alternatives

BitOutOfPractice · 20/11/2023 13:24

Speaking as a long term Essex resident, don’t go for Harlow.

my ex was born in Harlow though his horrible mother always quickly added “the old town though”. Perhaps you could have old town though” as a middle name if you go for Harlow!

Most people will assume Sofia relates to the Bulgarian capital.

LimeCheesecake · 20/11/2023 13:32

sophia.

I have the less popular spelling of a fairly common name (although in some parts of Europe my spelling is the common one, my mums family are from there and that’s why I’ve got this spelling). I get emails and post far more frequently with the wrong spelling than the correct one and it has caused issues over the years.

Most people in the UK would automatically assume the ph spelling not f. Make her life easier.

Harlow - I’d book a weekend in a hotel there and see if this is a place sums up the sort of personality and style you hope your daughter would have.

ellenpartridge · 20/11/2023 13:44

Sofia or Sophia (I like either spelling). Not keen on Harlow.

timoteigirl · 20/11/2023 15:01

Sofia or Sophia. Nobody who has been to Harlow would choose it. What about Sparrow as a nature name?

KirstenBlest · 20/11/2023 15:34

Sparrow? Would it pass the souvenir pencil case test?
You'd at least get things with Harlow or Sofia on them - post cards, fridge magnets etc
