Elizabeth or Emily? What's more timeless?

My and dh are struggling to decide on a name for our girl right now.

I adore the name Elizabeth I think it's very classy and probably the only genuinely timeless name out there, I think it's impossible for it to ever date or become unpopular. It feels vintage and is very versatile.

Our second choice is Emily which my dh loves but I don't love although I definitely don't dislike it. The only thing that puts me off slightly is that it dosent seem to have the same timeless feeling as Elizabeth does. I don't think it's as old as Elizabeth but I'm aware Emily is obviously an old name which has been in use since the 1800s (Emily Brontë and Dickinson) so it does have a couple of historical namesakes.

Despite this i always thought if it as more of a "modern classic" in the way that it only became mega popular in the last thirty years. According to a lot of naming websites Emily, was the number 1 name in the US/UK/Australia in the 90s/00s, it’s sliding down the charts now and will probably never be as popular as it has been over the last 25 years again. Not that it’s necessarily a bad things and it doesn't take away that it's a lovely name but I just wouldn’t class it as timeless because it is now dated to a specific time.

I was given a now dated/trendy late 80s name and absolutely hate it so I'm trying to make sure I don't do the same thing my mother didGrin
Thoughts? What name has more of a classic/timeless feel?

I'm a 40yo Emily, I like my name, it sounds nice and I think it's classic.

I like Elizabeth but not sure about Liz or Lizzie so that would put me off.

greengreengrass25 · 19/11/2023 14:18

I like both names and they are both used in our family

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 19/11/2023 14:20

Elizabeth, by a mile! It's a wonderful name.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 19/11/2023 14:22

I would definitely say Elizabeth is more timeless. I also prefer it to Emily. Neither are bad names but Elizabeth has far better options for nicknames and I feel like Emily is a bit overused. Both are pretty though.

They are both nice names (I slightly prefer the sound of Emily tbh) and classic, yes definitely especially Elizabeth.

Timeless, well Emily, though classic, comes and goes in waves of popularity, there were lots of Victorian Emilys, it was then considered old fashioned for a while, but there has been a more recent long lasting wave of popularity, now it might be starting to fade again. Still a pretty name.

Elizabeth is more timeless, there are always new baby Elizabeths, and most people consider it as a classic. Not always and with everyone though, I remember a friend of mine in around 1990 scoffing at someone else she knew who had just named her baby Hannah Elizabeth. This friend at the time felt that Elizabeth was old fashioned and frumpy. I didn't agree. But probably my friend just had bad taste!

Dd was nearly Emily and bizarrely, very nearly Emily Elizabeth after my aunt. However around the time our baby was born there were loads of Emily’s and it put me off so we changed to another name,

Coffeeandchristmascake · 19/11/2023 18:50

Both are timeless but I would go Emily. There will be loads of Elizabeth's the next few years after the queen.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 19/11/2023 22:53

I love Elizabeth ❤️

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 19/11/2023 23:04

Elizabeth is more timeless (in the sense that it's been used in the English-speaking world for maybe about 800 years instead of about 200) but Emily is not exactly faddy or made-up. I think both of them are considered pretty classic and here to stay. I personally like both names a lot - maybe I slightly prefer Elizabeth, but there's not much in it.

TLDRfuckers · 19/11/2023 23:06

Emily seems like an old-fashioned name to me, Elizabeth is way better! No
contest.

timoteigirl · 20/11/2023 15:05

Elizabeth is more timeless. Biblical.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 20/11/2023 21:22

Emily is also very similar to other fairly popular names at the moment - Amelie, Emilia, Amelia. All a bit too samey. Plus so, so many girls names end in the "eee" sound, which I find rather annoying!

Firebird83 · 21/11/2023 21:55

Elizabeth. Mine goes by Betsy.

caringcarer · 21/11/2023 23:26

Elizabeth is timeless and classy. I prefer it to Emily.

favouriteyellowsocks · 21/11/2023 23:32

Elizabeth. I am one, and have gone by Elizabeth Lizzie Liz Betty Eliza and Bess throughout various stages and with different friend groups in my life. So versatile I love it

Hotchocolatemousse · 22/11/2023 05:20

Elizabeth always but I know a little Eliza and that's classy and timeless as well. Emilia instead of Emily.

Parker231 · 22/11/2023 05:24

Both DD and I have Elisabeth as our middle name - family tradition. I love it.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 22/11/2023 11:00

I think both are timeless but I prefer Emily. I suspect both will be popular because of the Queen.

FMLife · 22/11/2023 20:10

Elizabeth is the only genuinely timeless name? Wtf does that even mean? Would you call her Liz? Because Liz doesn’t sound timeless. It sounds like a mall clerk with frizzy hair from 1987. You don’t like Emily, so Emily is out - why are you even considering names you don’t like.
