Is Martha a nice name?

I’m currently pregnant and expecting a little girl soon. I have always liked the name Martha whilst my husband and I have been trying to pick a name.

He isn’t keen on older names but will happily go with Martha if I like it. He originally liked Isla but then also liked Eden or Erin but then he’s not 100% on any name really, so it makes it difficult.

I feel like I’m doubting my decision though now as to whether I should pick this name because my husband doesn’t love it. I just wondered what other people’s thoughts were on Martha?

(Her middle name will be Olive after a family member).

Thanks!

Personally I don’t like it. There are some really beautiful girls names - Martha isn’t one of them. Not helped by the fact I knew one who was really hard to get along with.

Love it, we have a lovely wee Martha in the family who’s 8 and kicks serious arse 😃

I also have a friend called Martha who is around 40 and the most beautiful and kind woman! So I only have nice associations.

I like it but I think it needs a 'fresher' more modern middle name with it- not Olive.
Martha Olive gives off old lady vibes in a dull and dowdy way imo.
i understand that you will be honouring Olive and therefore would look closer at your DH's suggestions.
i think Eden Olive sounds fantastic.

peachescariad · 15/11/2023 10:50

Martha - frumpy and risk she'll be called 'Mar-fa' and Olive doesn't go at all.
Eden - awful
Isla - lovely but popular
Erin - gorgeous.

Martha is a fab name

WeighDownOnMe · 15/11/2023 14:42

It's quite drab to me. Reminiscent of a kitchen maid who works in the big house and might get knocked up by the eldest son, causing much scandal 😁

My colleague is cockney and named her daughter 'Mawwwfaaaaa' so it might be dialect dependent a little bit.

PinkRoses1245 · 15/11/2023 14:42

it's nice but I'd assume you were a Christian family.

WeighDownOnMe · 15/11/2023 14:43

I also think Olive is sad, quite lumpen and not a pleasant sound.

Yes, it's awful.

I don't like it, I think it sounds frumpy.

Ever since that film, Meet the Parents, came out years ago now, I can't hear the name Martha without adding on Focker! When they realise the female characters married name will be Pamela Martha Focker. It ruined the name for me. Then the Handmaids Tale made it worse. So I'm not a fan.

Mara is pretty and similar. Mara Olive - cute.

Eden and Erin also both nice.

cocolamer · 15/11/2023 15:10

I love Martha as well, friends used this as a middle name for their daughter and I think it is much nicer than the first name they gave her.

Tiramisulover · 15/11/2023 15:13

I love it.

SneezyEvie · 15/11/2023 17:05

I like it, although agree with other posters that Olive makes it sound frumpy.

tokesqueen · 15/11/2023 17:17

Ugly and clunky.

Abracadabra1 · 15/11/2023 17:26

Martha is a fab name. I have one. There are so many Islas and Erin's. I love Martha Olive.
If you like it use it, there will always be people who say they don't like a name.

muddyford · 15/11/2023 17:35

Lovely. Isla and Erin are a bit meh though.

Dartmoorcheffy · 15/11/2023 17:36

It was a family name and what I always hoped I would use if I had a daughter myself. My absolute favourite name.

Comedycook · 15/11/2023 17:36

I always think it's a very wholesome name. Very American and a bit housewifey iyswim.

Eh?

Lots of names have biblical roots, doesn't mean people who choose them are religious surely!

Martha Stewart influence I assume

AirFryerFrequentFlyer · 15/11/2023 17:46

I think it's a lovely name.

It's very rare to hear both first and middle names used together in real life, so use Olive if you want to.

Capz · 15/11/2023 17:47

I quite like Martha but it's getting quite popular. I love Olive, and the nickname Ollie, and would personally have that as a first name but I prefer less common names.

NotFastButFurious · 15/11/2023 19:39

Love it but Martha Olive doesn’t flow very well, although it might be better with a surname on the end……

JellyfishandShells · 15/11/2023 19:43

It’s a lovely name - feels timeless to me as I had a Great Aunt Martha, a cousin the same age as me, and now my godson’s daughter, plus a teenager down the road.
