Are your DC's names still your favourite?

And how old are your DC? 5 and 2 here and I still haven't come across a name I'd rather have used for them but I expect that will only last so long.

It makes me sad to think that at some point I might find a baby name I prefer to the one I have given them. What's been your experience?

I loved a load of “old lady” names for DD19, everyone hated them and talked me out of them. She’s nothing other than her name now but I wish I’d stood my ground as a matter of principle. Old lady names are everywhere for under 10’s now!

DS is names after my Ddad so has an old man (still quite popular) name that no one argued with. Grin

DS1: love
DS2: always felt “meh” about it. I really liked a different name but DH didn’t agree. He’s only 4 mo so hoping I get used to it.

My son is in his 40's and the name I chose back then was really, really unusual. It is a classic name (not moonchild or anything like that!). Fast forward to the late 90's and it became trendy and was everywhere. I still love the name though, it's just a shame everyone else discovered it.

Mine are in their 20’s and I still like their names, although not sure they would have the same ones if I were naming them today., although they are quite popular for todays babies.

I am very pleased though that ds2 was a boy, I now really don’t like the girls name he would have been.

BinkyBeaufort · 10/11/2023 21:35

DS has a name I decided on when I was just a child myself. He's 35 now, and I'd still choose it.
DH chose DDs name, but I'd still choose the one I loved back then (even longer ago than DS). If that makes sense.

DD1 is 18. I compromised on her name - I went for one we could agree on, and used the name I really wanted for her middle name. I wish I'd put them the other way round, but she is very pleased with what she has.

DD2 is 15 and her name is still probably my favourite. Her dad picked her middle name, and I think it's meh.

when I went back to my name lists for DC2 I didn't want to use a lot of them anymore as I no longer liked them

Yes, we had a boy first, and then a girl. Despite us being very sure quite early on , of the girl's name we would have used if dc1 had been a boy, it just wasn't considered for dc2 .

It's quite odd really. I still like it as a name, but just had 'moved on. Odd, as it wasn't particularly "fashionable".

Do most others use the name they didn't use for dc1, for dc2 ?

No, all of my children know what names I would have given them if they'd been the opposite sex, and I didn't actually use any of those names for subsequent children. But I'm fairly sure that if I'd had a boy after my youngest daughter I'd have used the boys' name I'd chosen for her.

BotterMon · 11/11/2023 21:19

Yes - in their 30's!!

Cakeorchocolate · 11/11/2023 21:26

Yes still happy with chosen names.
Youngest is only a few weeks though. His name has grown on me more since he was born. I hope it continues to.

With both kids we didn't know anyone with the names but then seemed to come across multiple others with them afterwards.

princefamilypaper · 13/11/2023 17:24

Yes I absolutely love my daughter's name. I'm pregnant and can't find anything I love as much

dressedforcomfort · 16/11/2023 17:02

DS's name wasn't my absolute favourite favourite at the time. But it was in my top 10 and the only name DH and I could agree on (and we went through LOADS of names.)

I still like it tbh. It's classic but underused, it's easy to spell and pronounce and DS is the only one in his class. No regrets.

Notmetoo · 16/11/2023 17:04

I probably wouldn't use the same names now tastes change. But I couldn't imagine my children being called anything else. They are their names. It matters less what they are called, what matters is who they are.

Sunnydays41 · 22/11/2023 21:44

DC1 (DD7) - fairly unusual (perhaps top 500? - though have met two others, one older and one younger!) - still probably one of my top names, though there are a couple of others I like as much/may prefer. One more common and one even less so. Only had one boy name picked out which wasn't even on the shortlist for DC2 (DS5).

DC2 - high end of top 100, though getting more popular. Again, one of my favourites, but there's two others I like as much. One probably around the same popularity, one much less common.

Definitely done with DC, but would love to use those names 😁
