My surname is Oates. Which I didn't mind until looking for baby names.

My 1st born is called Lyra 🤍

Thinking about name for no2 and love the names Winter or Autumn 🍁!

But have a small feeling these look like porridge brands when paired with Oates. My husband thinks I'm overanalyzing.

Autumn Oates
Winter Oates

Please help and be honest.

TIA

I have no strong feelings either way about the name Autumn. However I'm with pp, it doesn't go well with Oates and sounds like a brand of porridge.

evtheria · 11/11/2023 12:46

I like your surname a lot! Especially the way it's spelt.

Unfortunately porridge and autumn/winter are so linked that I would find it an odd choice for name pairing, and would assume the parents thought it would be cute-funny...? Which is fine but I think it's very open to gentle (and not so gentle) teasing for their entire life.

Autumn-Jane Oates works

It doesn't. The Jane looks like it's been tacked on to avoid the name being a cereal crop, the -Jane will be dropped, and Autumn-Jane doesn't flow.

ragrugger · 11/11/2023 13:02

I agree with the porridge or cereal bar comments although I like both names.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 15/11/2023 11:04

Yes it sounds like cereal.
Jessica Oates
Rebecca Oates
Francesca Oates
3 syllable names suit.

GasDrivenNun · 15/11/2023 11:22

I think a name ending in a consonant would sound best. The the 2 names don't seem to run into each other when you say them.
Eg
Juliet Oates
Elizabeth Oates
Harriet Oates
Lauren Oates
Carol Oates
Charlotte Oates

AHalfWarmedFish · 15/11/2023 13:17

Another vote for no. It definitely does sound like breakfast. It’s made me really want a nice warm bowl of porridge though 🤤

PainterInPeril · 15/11/2023 13:53

How about... Ophelia Oates? (I'll get my coat).

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/11/2023 18:45

I think it sounds fine

dressedforcomfort · 16/11/2023 07:50

I think Oates is a decent enough surname but I agree with you OP. Autumn/Winter Oates sounds like a farmer describing his crop rotation.

Samzzz · 16/11/2023 19:01

My baby girl is Winter Victoria. You can’t help the surname you have and it shouldn’t put you off a name you love.

RosaElize · 16/11/2023 21:15

I would say that 9/10 when I read these types of posts, I think no, it’s fine- you’re overthinking it. On this occasion though I do think it’s just too descriptive as a pairing. It literally conjures up the imagine of a warm bowl of porridge! Not necessarily a bad connotation, but a tough one to carry for life

I do think you could get away with it in the middle perhaps

really like the previous suggestion of Annabelle

I’ll offer-

Emilia Oates
Edith Oates
Cecilia Oates
Valentina Oates

good luck!

Mariettabiscuits · 16/11/2023 21:55

I'm thinking a 3 syllable name ending in a consonant, but ideally not 'n'
Eg Elizabeth Oates
Rosalind Oates
Genevieve Oates

Coffeeandchristmascake · 16/11/2023 23:12

What about Aubrey?

RosaCaramella · 17/11/2023 00:19

I’m old enough to remember the American singers Hall & Oates and never thought of porridge at all when heard the name.

If you have your heart set on Autumn or Winter you should go ahead and choose one of them. You could add a middle name so if her name gets read out at school etc, it wouldn’t sound as descriptive as some other posters suggest.

I like names like Susanna and Katerina but you know what you like best so you should just do you. 😊

MovingBird123 · 17/11/2023 16:03

Both sound like tasty recipes.

RobertaFirmino · 18/11/2023 22:56

A beautiful first name to go with Oates would be Halland.

Rosme · 19/11/2023 08:55

You’re joking, right? This can’t be a genuine post, no mum would even consider naming their child Winter Oates. 😂

Mariettabiscuits · 19/11/2023 23:43

Ottilie Oates
