Wise mumsnetters, please help.
We are yet to agree on a name for incoming DD and I've lost all hope we ever will!

We tend to like quite 'girly' names but my husband prefers less common ones than I do.

Some of his favourites are: Sophia, Aurelia, Sierra, Aoife, Roisin (he is Irish)

I love: Esme, Gabriella, Mila, Amelie, Eloise, Calista

Any other suggestions?
Or any love for our current faves?

Sophia - overused if you also include Sofia
Aurelia - too frilly and doesn't sound that nice
Sierra - 1980s Ford. Means jagged mountain chains. Lots of Siennas
Aoife - too samey with all the Eva, Ava, Evie names.
Roisin- ok but is it Rosh-een or Row-sheen?
Esme - ok but Esmy, Esmay, Ezmay etc
Gabriella - too long will be Gaby/Gabby or Ella
Mila - Me-luh. Sounds like Mealy
Amelie - Don't like the sound. Too many Amelias, Emilias and Emilys
Eloise - a bit of a mouthful, gets written as Elouise (ugh) and might be Ellie
Calista- nice

babynamehelp65 · 03/11/2023 13:10

You're all stars, thanks! It is really useful to hear opinions and I love some of the other suggestions.

I still don't know what we'll go for, but as PP says, when we see her hopefully one will just fit her!
It feels odd as we had DS's name picked out from 1st ultrasound.

Will update when she is here :)

NotFastButFurious · 03/11/2023 14:19

are you willing to share what DS is called? It might gives us some ideas as to what you might like with it.

babynamehelp65 · 03/11/2023 14:21

Of course!

He is Leo.
We loved the name as soon as we picked it, but it is INCREDIBLY common now. Before he was born, we didn't know of any Leos : /

So, that makes us less keen to pick really popular girl's names (like Sophia, Sienna or Mia)

DuchessOfSausage · 03/11/2023 14:27

Leo is lovely @babynamehelp65 . Avoid an L name (Lily, Luna, Lyra, Lila etc)
Leo and Calista or Leo and Róisín are both nice but how about
Leo and Rosa?

babynamehelp65 · 03/11/2023 14:32

Maybe silly, but I was put off using Rose/Rosa when I realised the two Titanic main characters are Leo and Rose! Probably not a big deal, but I can't 'un see it'.

Calista is such a favourite of mine, but it DH hasn't warmed to it just yet. I mention it now and then, just to see if things have changed!

OP posts:
DuchessOfSausage · 03/11/2023 14:38

I've not seen the film! Hang on, weren't they Jack and Rose?

What puts me off Róisín is that the fadas will not be added, and it will probably get misspelt and mispronounced, but you'd get that with many names.
I like Calista as it makes me think of the Ally McBeal actress.

Leo and Kate? Grin

Can't watch the film now. Just checked on wiki and apparently the ship sinks.

babynamehelp65 · 03/11/2023 14:49

Haha, it's such a classic! Brilliant movie.

You're so right though, Leo DiCaprio is the actor who plays Jack. Such a non issue, but I can't get past it!

I agree the issue with fadas puts me off, similarly to the accent options with Esme / Esmé / Esmée.

I just want a straightforward but beautifully breathtaking and unusual name that DH and I both love, that goes with Leo and that everyone knows how to pronounce. Is that too much to ask?!

DuchessOfSausage · 03/11/2023 14:51

Anna, Zoe, Cara, Alice, Emma, Mary, Hannah, Tamara

babynamehelp65 · 03/11/2023 14:54

Oh Tamara. I love this. I had a friend with this name when little, and it's so pretty. Also love the NN Tammy. Going on the ever-growing list!

Leo and Ava
Leo and Ivy
Leo and Ruby
Leo and Thea
Leo and Erin
Leo and Zara
Leo and Maeve
Leo and Summer

DuchessOfSausage · 03/11/2023 15:04

Cally is pretty too. Check with the surname, and check the diminutive too.

https://names.darkgreener.com/ is great for checking name popularity but is still only up to 2021 so nearly 2 yrs out of date and only covers England and Wales.

Blackcatowner44 · 03/11/2023 15:18

Sophia: lovely but not at all "unusual" if that's what you're going for.
Aurelia: lovely
Sierra: nice enough but can't get excited.
Aoife: nice but again a very common name.
Roisin: not fussed on this
Esme: just no, I knew a horrid old lady Esme though so am biased now.
Gabriella: love this
Mila: love this
Amelie: way too common now
Eloise:love this
Calista: my favourite.

I'd go for Calista Eloise or Gabriella Aurelia

bettynutkins · 03/11/2023 15:54

Aurelia is my favourite. Similar that I like are

Ophelia
Ottilie
Calliope

This happened to me too, our Leo is nearly 8!

Aria999 · 03/11/2023 16:51

Genevieve?

DesertSnow · 03/11/2023 19:18

Love Esmae and Sophia.

GregoryFluff · 05/11/2023 09:42

We've had a toddler Sariyah join swim class, I think that's a lovely name

OopsieeDaisy · 05/11/2023 22:04

I like Gabrielle from your list. For some reason I really dislike Calista, it’s like a mix of callous and blister…

How about Leo and Annabel / Annabelle?
