Mabyn would be an odd name for a girl. A bit like calling a girl Sonny or Laddie
Eleri is El-ERRy not El-airy
Llywela is nice, Llewella is awful
Eilys is a new one on me, Eirlys is snowdrop
Elfrys (EL-vriss) is not much used, and neither is Eldeg

Can you explain what you mean about Mabyn being similar to calling a girl Sonny or Laddie? I’m curious.

Mabyn is the name of a Cornish medieval saint and I thought it had a similar vibe to OPs other names.

@TeamSleep , St Mabyn or Mabon was male. Mab means 'son' in both Cornish and Welsh and the suffix -yn is masculine.

Interesting, is Merryn male as well? I know sisters called Elowen and Mabyn so I just always associate it as female. I think it’s pretty and can get shortened to May, which is popular. The girl I know is often called Mayb which suits her.

KirstenBlest · 04/11/2023 19:16

@TeamSleep , I think Merryn was also male, but the original spelling of the name was different.

Mabon is pronounced Mabbon (rhymes with savlon). Mabyn (Maybin) is an anglicised version.

Yeah right. It's ludicrous to a pp and I think it's awful.

It doesn't mean sweet as in 'That was a sweet gesture'.
'Fluent' is open to interpretation.

@Iliedwheniwas17 , but your user name suggests that you might not always be truthful.

Thanks for explaining. I don’t think Mabbon sounds so pretty, so I can understand why it’s been anglicised.

LOVE Gwenllian but... have we established if the OP is in Wales? As otherwise... 😬

(I say this as the parent of a child with an "easy" Welsh name which often gets mangled in England)

Iliedwheniwas17 · 04/11/2023 20:08

@KirstenBlest where do you stand with the names Aderyn/deryn? I know one of each and my fluent welsh friend from mid wales was appalled people had called their child Bird. Neither parent of these children was welsh speaking. Are they random names or normal?

CornishTiger · 04/11/2023 20:13

Also wondering if @Ididivfama is in wales. Also have an easy standard Welsh name that the English struggle with spelling of and a few doctors couldn’t pronounce. Honestly its a basic easy name!

KirstenBlest · 04/11/2023 20:15

Aderyn is bird and is masculine. Deryn is how people usually say Aderyn in speech. It's not really a name.
If I said someone was 'yn dipyn o dderyn' (a bit of a 'deryn/aderyn')I'd be saying he's 'a bit of a player'

The names like Melys, Cariad and Deryn look like the person naming the child didn't understand Welsh well enough to get the nuance.
