Abbey, Abby or Abbie

Which one is better?
Btw this will be their full name rather than a nickname for Abigail

I'd say Abbie. Or Abi. You will always have to spell the name out and I expect you'll get various versions on birthday cards etc.

Whataretheodds · 29/10/2023 05:40

Not 1.

1 is already a word: it's where monks or nuns live and worship.

lookingforaholiday · 29/10/2023 05:46

Abbie for me too

renthead · 29/10/2023 05:49

I think Abby is most traditional and I like it best. Abi is another one that makes sense.

SoSad44 · 29/10/2023 05:50

Abby

definitely not Abbey. Abi looks like a nickname

ChimChimeny · 29/10/2023 05:54

I know an Abi.
I think although PP is right that Abbey is already a word it doesn't t seem to be used for a name, Abby is more so. And came up correctly as I was typing (as did abi) so would appear to be legit words. Abbie isn't and wants to autocorrect to Annie

FallingAutumnLeaf · 29/10/2023 06:26

Abigail or Abi

Riverlee · 29/10/2023 06:32

Abbey is a cathedral (not technically a cathedral but you get my drift).

Abbie for me, although everyone will assume it’s short for Abigail.

GoodVibesHere · 29/10/2023 06:34

Not Abbey, as that's a word as in Westminster Abbey.

I'd go for Abbie or Abi. Short for Abigail.

Robinbuildsbears · 29/10/2023 06:36

Abigail, pick a nickname but use the proper name on the BC

Other options include:
Abelone
Abena
Abene
Abeni
Abha
Abia
Abiah
Abijah
Abilene
Abla
Abril

theduchessofspork · 29/10/2023 06:36

I’d call her Abigail personally, it’s an elegant name and she might like the option. But Abbie

BoleynMemories13 · 29/10/2023 09:56

I'm usually one for using full names rather than ie short-forms, but Abbie/Abby has stood the test of time and feels fine to use as a given name (much like Ellie, Katie, Evie etc). When you consider some of the cutesy things people call their kids these days, Abbie is perfectly acceptable! (And personally I've never liked Abigail, the Gail part makes it feel quite ugly to me).

Abbie or Abby is fine, whichever you prefer. Abbey is a big no, for reasons others have stated above. Abi I would assume is definitely short for Abigail. It feels unfinished as a given name.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 29/10/2023 09:58

Thought you were going to call her Which for a moment.

Abbie or Abi, but personally I’d give her Abigail so she has the option. Abbey will just make you look stupid.

Pemba · 29/10/2023 12:12

Abbie is very sweet, definitely not Abbey, as it's a building!

But what's wrong with Abigail as the full name? Great name.

Theoldwoman · 29/10/2023 21:48

Please think about Abigail. Heard too many Scabby Abby’s over the years.

I prefer Abbie.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/10/2023 21:50

Not Abbey.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 29/10/2023 21:52

I'd go with Abigail (and Abi) to give her options, but if you're adamant you don't want to then Abby.

Abi doesn't feel like a proper name
you can't land her with Abbey

user1492757084 · 30/10/2023 02:11

Abbie is sweet and smart.

nobleisle · 30/10/2023 07:54

Abbie

ReviewingTheSituation · 30/10/2023 07:59

Give her the long form name and just use the short version from the get go.

I have a 'proper' name on my BC, but was known as the short form from birth. As an adult, I was very glad to have the choice and have used my full name for 25 years now.
My parents, and people I know from my childhood, still use the short version (and it would be very odd to hear them using the long version), but I much prefer the full version and am very glad to have the choice.

WaltzingWaters · 30/10/2023 08:03

I’d go against the grain here and say Abbey. But then my oldest friend is Abbey spelt this way so I’m used to it as a name.

Abby doesn’t look right or nice imo. If not Abbey I’d say Abbie.

floatingnoodle · 30/10/2023 08:21

Abbie. Abbey makes me think it autocorrected and you didn’t know abbey is a word.

Jewelspun · 30/10/2023 08:27

Not Abbey.

HolidaysPleaseNow · 30/10/2023 08:29

Abbie

MrsWimpy · 30/10/2023 08:30

Would Abi be pronounced "ay-bee", like ABC?

Abbie is the most usable
