I know, people are eejits, my name is gaelic and people say stuff like 'are you sure?' when i tell them how to spell it.

But if we never persevere, people will never learn. Also i'm clearly not that traumatised by it cos my daughter has a gaelic name too.

I love this name but as we live south of the border we're going with a more easy to pronounce Scottish name with a similar sound- Ailsa. I'll probably shorten it to Ailey at times.

darleneconnor · 24/01/2011 12:01

I'm Scottish but I pronounce it more like A-lay than A-lee.

Hawdyerweesht · 21/09/2016 12:49

Ceilidh is pronounced A(hard A) lish

squoosh · 21/09/2016 14:52

Ceilidh is pronounced A(hard A) lish

You revived a zombie thread to post that?

Ceilidh is pronounced kay-lee
Eilidh is pronounce ay-lee

No idea where you got the 'ish' sound from, but it's wrong.

I am Scottish and would pronounce it Ay-lay not Ay-lee.

blueskyinmarch · 22/09/2016 20:23

And ceilidh would be pronounced Kay-lay not Kay-lee.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 22/09/2016 20:24

Some of the suggested pronunciations are hilarious!

wayway13 · 22/09/2016 20:26

I'm Scottish and that is DD's name. It is 100% Ay-ley as in Hayley but no "H" or Ceilidh but no "C". We live in England. Most people haven't heard of it but they get used to it.

blueskyinmarch · 22/09/2016 20:26

I didn’t even notice it was a zombie thread!
