Trying to decide between Liv or Alma for my baby girl. The name should work in Swedish, Dutch and English - open to other suggestions!

Alma

SkaneTos · 26/10/2023 22:35

Both names are lovely, and they both work very well in Swedish!

bettymoo212 · 26/10/2023 22:39

My 10-month-old daughter is called Liv and I absolutely love it. I think it sounds strong and beautiful.

SkaneTos · 26/10/2023 22:39

In the Nordic countries, Liv is a name, not just a nickname.
The original meaning of the name is "shield" or "protection", I think, but today the word "liv" means "life".

A beautiful name!

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/10/2023 22:40

Liv, beautiful.
Alma, not so much.

Strokethefurrywall · 26/10/2023 23:08

Liv - excellent
Alma - sweet old nun from the Sister Act movie.

On balance, I prefer Liv but only because I see a 90 year old nun when I hear Alma!

s3tut0y3r · 26/10/2023 23:26

Alma. People will always ask what Liv is short for. Alma is pretty.

apapuchi · 26/10/2023 23:38

Alma is my absolute favourite girl name. I had two boys 😂

It means soul in Spanish (my husband is from a Spanish speaking country, I know that isn't directly relevant to you but it's a nice meaning) and I'd be thrilled to bits meeting a little Alma.

apapuchi · 26/10/2023 23:39

Alma is having a bit of a comeback I think, it was the number 1 girl's name in Denmark last year I think. Getting a bit more popular in the UK too but obviously nowhere near top.

LulooLemon · 27/10/2023 00:45

Alma Deutscher is an inspiration. 🎶
I think of her when I hear the name.

I prefer Alma.
Alma Olivia goes very nicely.

coxesorangepippin · 27/10/2023 01:13

Oh god no, not another Liv, Olivia etc

Too many of them

Newmamma10 · 27/10/2023 20:56

Thanks everyone - really split crowd! Now considering Elin (pronounced Eh-lin) might be a better option. Thoughts?

When people hear this name spoken, they'll assume it's Helen, Ellen or even Elaine.

RuthW · 27/10/2023 21:17

Liv isn't a proper name and Alma is an unpleasant sound. Sorry.

I rather like Elin with a Swedish (and actually also a German) pronunciation.

But I’m not too sure about English. she may end up being called Ellen, unfortunately (as pp mentioned).

tortoiseshellcats · 27/10/2023 22:17

I like both Elin and Alma

shoopshoopdedoo · 27/10/2023 23:19

I love Alma! Also like Elin. Less keen on Liv.

Liv (Leev in Scandinavian languages) = to me means the fabulous Liv Ulllman. Her fearless and honest acting did so much to show how women actually felt in thec mid 20th cent (as opposed to how Hollywood pretended to us we should feel) , and that helped paved the way for quite a bit of equality legislation.

Alma - I know it has a good meaning -soul - but I can't warm to it.

Alba - where I live (Scotland) is the name of a political party led by Alec Salmon. Nuff said. Also the name of BBC Scotland's Gaelic channel and so, for many, a brand name. And it's pronounced All-up-pah, unless you are Spanish/Italian. If so, then the conditions for naming are totally different.

Sugarfree23 · 29/10/2023 12:32

@Newmamma10 Elin I like much better than Io.
Yes people will think it's a variation of Helen or, Ellen but hey ho it's 100x better than io.

peaceinourtime · 29/10/2023 13:07

Liv for sure. It’s a beautiful Scandinavian name. It’s brighter then Olivia of which there are tons and Alma.

Gowlett · 29/10/2023 13:09

Liv seems like a nickname.

Sorry wrong thread but Elin is still much better than Liv.

Another alternative to Liv would be Liz but that's quite dated and more of a nickname for Elizabeth.

SwedishEdith · 29/10/2023 13:53

What about Lina as an alternative? I like the Tina/Nina/Lina sounds - modern but work internationally as well
