Would you name a baby Damian?

My SIL is thinking of naming her baby Damian, and I know I have to nod and smile, but she appears not to realise the name Damian is associated with the devil! Or is it just me?

Their surname also begins with a 'D' so I'm concerned he's going to get teased for being a 'double D', and the middle name they've chosen begins with an A so the initials are DAD, and obviously Damian is the devils son in the movie! Maybe I'm overthinking it, or isn't the same connotations with younger generation, but I just worry he's going to be teased!

I wouldn't.

Liv999 · 24/10/2023 17:10

I would no problem, lots of Damians around, The Omen is just a movie it's not real, I doubt any of his friends are going to associate it with the movie

CrystalDay · 24/10/2023 17:11

I wouldn't call a baby Damian, probably put off because I know a grown up Damian who is a bit of a dick.

Saying that if Id have asked on mumsnet wether I should have given my youngest DC the name I did it probably would have been a resounding no.

RestingPlace · 24/10/2023 17:12

It's a perfectly ordinary name. I don't much like it myself, but I know a fair few Damiens who predate the The Omen film franchise -- it was popular in Ireland because of the martyr, and because of a Fr Damien Something who was famous for his leper colonies. It was really common in the 70s and 80s. To me, it's on a level with names like Kevin, Keith, Darren, Colin. I certainly don't associate it any more with the spawn of Satan than I associate the name Harry with a wand-wielding Chosen One.

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2023 17:22

It's just a name.

Daisyhoney · 24/10/2023 17:33

The mere mention brings back memories of Delboy in Only Fools and Horses for me 😁

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/10/2023 17:36

I wanted to- started a thread on here and everyone said the devil- had a girl so was redundant. Still love the name though

DerekFaker · 24/10/2023 17:37

You're over-thinking.

Excited for Halloween by any chance?

susanu67 · 24/10/2023 17:41

i have a very lovely nephew called damien and he comes from and is part of a very active christian family... its just a name...

nameXname · 24/10/2023 17:41

As previous poster said, The Omen is just a story. It's not real. Many people think that the Devil isn't real, either.

FWIW, the name Damian (also spelled Damien, which I rather prefer) is associated with heroic Father Damien, who devoted his life to the care of people with leprosy (and who Robert Louis Stevenson, no less, praised and defended) and also with much earlier doctor twins Cosmas and Damian, who are honoured by many as saints.

Wanting to help and heal are great things for a name to be associated with.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 24/10/2023 17:41

I once taught a Damien. His sister was called Angel. His parents told me he had been deliberately named as had his sister!

gotomomo · 24/10/2023 17:43

I have the scene from only fools and horses in my head now!

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 24/10/2023 17:43

Oh and the baby she was pregnant with was going to be called Amadeus again deliberately. It was a very interesting parents evening!

MadeOfAllWork · 24/10/2023 17:43

Although I would think of the Omen films I’d also think it was a rather 80s name, like Darren or Lee.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/10/2023 17:44

I have to say I wouldn't.

Somanycats · 24/10/2023 17:47

I think of it as an Irish Catholic name. I have a lovely 60 year old cousin of that name. It's a perfectly good name probably due a revival soon.

LauderSyme · 24/10/2023 17:49

I wouldn't but I'm old enough to think of The Omen and always get the Twilight Zone theme music running through my head whenever I meet a Damien!

daisybrown37 · 24/10/2023 18:01

My initials are DAD, never been called double D!

Ilikeyourdecor · 24/10/2023 18:03

I wouldn't but not because of any connotations, I just don't like the way it sounds (it's the "aim" sound. I don't like Jamie /Amy for the same reason).

Wouldn't bother me if I met a little Damian.

WeeStyleIcon · 24/10/2023 18:10

I like Damon but not Damien

FeverBeam · 24/10/2023 18:20

You're way overthinking it.

StoatofDisarray · 24/10/2023 18:29

It's just a name. It's not like calling him Beelzebub.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/10/2023 18:43

No I wouldn't.
Initials matter. I know a man whose initials spell an animal. He hates it. Over 60 too.

DragonFly98 · 24/10/2023 18:44

No

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 24/10/2023 18:46

“Damien, this is just for you!”

Still haunting all these years later.
