I think Giulia is a very nice name and I like its European style but still sounding fairly English in its pronunciation. Thoughts?

It's a lovely name and it was on our short list. Dh is Italian so we have an Italian surname and all of our children have Italian names, but we chose one of his mum's names instead. It's the name of an Alpha Romeo car btw, would that bother you? (It wouldn't bother me, but just to let you know.)

I'd go for the Julia spelling. Giulia will be misspelt as Guilia, Julia, Gulia etc

I like it but obviously the spelling will be a PITA for her, so unless you have Italian connections then go with Julia

My first thought on seeing it written down was I wouldn’t know how to pronounce it.

Gill - Lia
Gi -Ulia
Gul -Lia

Although as people are suggesting Julia, is it pronounced as Julia? Ie. With a soft G, like a J?

Reminds me of the wedding singer

I have an Italian relative with this name. She lives in England now and everyone struggles with the pronunciation. She gets some very odd efforts!

DuchessOfSausage · 21/10/2023 11:57

@Riverlee , pretty much the same as Julia. There is a tiny i after the G sound but it's almost impereceptible.
You pretty much sum up what the Giulia I know said.

From my experience of not-run-of-the-mill names, some people seem to struggle with them. e.g, seeing Eloise as Elouise, Louis as Louise, Fionn as Ffion, Tadhg as Tadgh, Clyde as Cylde etc

The pronunciation is almost identical in both Italian and English, just slightly more of a rounded U. Italians have no difficulty pronouncing Julia, but Brits might think the G is pronounced as the G in good.

It's been in the top 5 in Italy for a long time now. I like it. It's modern and sounds pretty.

Here's the pron of both side by side. Julia has a long /u:/ while Italian vowels all have the same length so it sounds more staccato.
