Allie as a first name?

I absolutely love Allie for a girl but I know that it’s normal a nickname. However I don’t like any of the longer names and even so, a lot of the abbreviations go to Ali which I’m not keen on for a girl. Thoughts please.

I think Allie is fine as a name. Similar to Ellie, which is totally considered to be a name in its own right. I do like Alina if you want a longer name, but don't think itnis particularly necessary.

Just use Allie on its own, there is no need to use a longer name that you don’t really want or have any attachments to.

Can I ask if your full name should typically be shorted to Ali rather than Allie? If so, has anyone questioned why you’ve spelt it Allie? Thanks 💗

It's never come up- Ali is more of a male, Arabic name to my mind.
Thinking back to school the formal version was always used- and at work now I'm called long version. Although I sign emails Ax and refuse to use pronouns as part of my resistance

Personally I would choose a longer name. A lot of nice suggestions on this thread.
Wouldn't choose Catherine as a middle name or she will be Ally Cat.

I'd always assume Ali for a man and Allie for a woman. Does anyone else remember that American sitcom Kate and Allie?

There are so many great names beginning with Al that I'd probably give her one of those as a backup.

People just don't question these things.

I'd go with Allie, it's lovely!

MerryChristmasToYou · 18/10/2023 20:44

It can be Ali, Ally or Allie, I suppose, but ally is a word, as is alley.

I think if you establish the shortened version with a particular spelling at the start it will stick. Get some personalized items with it on etc.

the Ally/Ali’s that I know are short for Alexandra but they grew up being known as Ally.

Given that Ellie is an established name on its own I don’t know why Allie can’t be so if you really want to then go for it. However, I agree with a previous poster that Alexandra and Allegra are both good options.

I'm an Ali (Alison). That's the spelling I've always used for myself - occasionally in school some friends would write Ally because they hadn't seen my name written down, but over time the spelling Ali stuck.

But while many of my partner and many friends call me Ali, others including my colleagues call me Alison. I actually like having the two names and would always introduce myself as Alison in a work setting. Ali feels much more 'familiar', and like a special name for those closest to me.

I think you could use Allie on its own. I like it .
Or what about Natalia, that could be shortened to Allie Smile

CarrieBarryAndGary · 19/10/2023 12:01

'Ellie' has permeated the collective consciousness, becoming a moniker unto itself. Allie, resembling Ellie in essence, can be adopted sans an extended name on the birth certificate, and no one will bat an eye. Go for it.

P.s. this post has jogged my memory of Ally McBeal
