All in the title.

Looking for name suggestions as we are getting no where fast. Don't want to give any of our current shortlist as I think this can influence responses a lot, I'd just like a complete open book :).

Maximum of 2 syllables, nothing too frilly or twee sounding.

Love strong, fierce names that hold their own but I know those adjectives have different meanings for different people.
Likely not going with a middle name so a name that holds it own in that sense too is important. Surname is 2 syllables long and ends in an S.

Not a fan of old fashioned or dated names e.g Edith/Elsie etc, and dated to be would probably be anything I went to school around so anything 90's Rebecca, Jessica, Sarah etc.

Hoping for something not too popular but have become a bit more lenient to this as time goes on, preferably nothing top 20 though.

Thanks in advance 😊

Not much to add really, as all my favourites have been mentioned multiple times, but just to say that these are exactly my style of name and I don’t understand why most of them aren’t more popular (DD’s school is a sea of super frilly/twee girls’ names).

Our criteria for naming DD were almost exactly the same as OP’s, and she ended up as a Greta.😀

I had similar criteria and we've chosen Robyn. It feels strong and unfussy.

It's also within the top 100 but near the 100 side of the chart which is the type of name we wanted. Nothing too unusual but likely to be only her or another one or two in her schools.

Fleur405 · 14/10/2023 18:44

I also wanted a non frilly name. We went with Erin but I also liked

Morven
Morag
Elspeth

(I’m Scottish… as you can probably tell!)

Thank you all for your replies.

We are still finding it so difficult to settle on a name.

This has helped us rule out one of our shortlist, but has added another to it.

Shortlist is now :Erin, Raine, Nova

(We did have Callie but we think this is now a no (it's doesn't work with our surname and I feel is not strong enough). Love the meaning of Nova and it's been added to our list, but concerned about the car thing.

@SM4713 it's amazing you named 2 of our shortlisted names.

@Cheeseontoastt Calista has been on our list, with Callie as the nn, but there's just something not quite right for us, I can't say what it is, maybe it's too out there, or it's the syllables, I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️

@CoffeeWithCheese
Erin is definitely my number one choice but my OH just isn't sure, the popularity is also something that concerns me, I always thought I'd go for 100+ in popularity charts, how have you found it?
Your comment also made me laugh 😅 of course that would be the name in my number one spot and @Sunnyshoeshine also not helping my case for Erin 😅 it's a lovely name though.

@wwyd2021medicine @roarrfeckingroar @Skeldale
I've noticed Stella gets a lot of love on here but I just really can't get past Stella being a pint of larger.

@MooseBreath
Quinn is a name I really like but OH has never been keen

@Growuppeople
rayne/Raine was our chosen name for years before this pregnancy. We still really like it just can't commit. I have concerns around the negativity of rain and the nursery rhyme "rain rain go away'" but I love how it sounds and the simplicity of it, yet still really unique

@TempsPerdu that's really interesting! Did you have any names that were up there for you when deciding?

Whereabouts are you, @Havanalily1806 ? We are London and ive only met one other Erin so far so the popularity thing doesnt bother me. But i appreciate in other parts of the country, it might feel a bit different! I have quite an uncommon name and it was actually a bit annoying growing up because i always had to repeat it and spell it, so i was keen not to inflict that on my daughter 😂

I would say for all the joking about DD's name, i absolutely LOVE that her little personality coming through already and has been since a baby. Who wants an easy life anyway?! 🤪 Plus she was a NICU baby and i just think her name reflects how strong she has been since the day she was born. But obviously i am biased! 😊

Erin is the outright winner from your shortlist.

Alternatively:
Ellen
Eden
Amber
Alice
Anya

Havanalily1806 · 30/10/2023 09:07

@Sunnyshoeshine

We're up north so complete opposite, to be honest I think I only know of one Erin.

I'm really keen to see the stats from ONS if they're ever released...

I get that, I have a name that when shorted can be spelt differently and it can get annoying, does your daughters name ever get shortened at all? I can't think what it would be shortened too and I also think that's a regional thing where we shorten nearly every name 🙈
