Kids with same initial name?

Livvylooox · 10/10/2023 12:15

So I don’t think this is an issue btw this isn’t a post slaying this!

When I fell pregnant with DD, I did say I won’t strictly do kids all with same initial as I know some people who actually do this from their first kid (say they’ll use that initial throughout) Again not a problem

We have DS Finley, and for DD I kind of atm like Ferne?

they’ll be about 2yr apart, are these names too sing songy?

I like the name Ferne / Fern as a whole not just because it has the same intial

It's a bit too matchy if you have a non-rhotic accent. Fern is the better spelling.

LadybirdsAreFab · 10/10/2023 12:21

My brother and I have very similar names and it was never a problem, we share the same first 3 letters of our names. We joked with our parent's that they did it so they only had to order one set of name tags for our school uniform. We are just over 2 years apart.

SallyWD · 10/10/2023 12:25

I think its absolutely fine. Loads of people have the same first letter for their children. My husband is one of five and all their names start with the same letter!
Yes while they're kids people will talk about Finlay and Ferne but then they'll be people in their own right and people will talk about them individually.

Livvylooox · 10/10/2023 12:37

I think because the gap isn’t massive I’m worried it’ll look like I’m trying to be matchy matchy!

but yes will most certainly be their own people with own personalities :)

@Livvylooox , if you had 3 kids, e.g.. Finley, Jo(e) and Fern, it wouldn't be an issue. I can think of many friends who were something like Sarah and Steven, Oliver and Oscar, or or John and Jessica, and it's not an issue.

minuette1 · 10/10/2023 14:03

I have the same initial as my two brothers and it was quite annoying. I remember once we got to swimming lessons when I was young, and mine had been cancelled as they thought it was a duplicate booking in error for 2 'J Smith's'. Also I once got a refund cheque from the tax office and one of my brother's thought it was for him and paid it into his bank account. On the other hand, I guess our mum saved a lot of time not having to sew different name labels into hand-me-down uniforms etc.

Livvylooox · 10/10/2023 14:15

Right something potentially up for debate aha!

DH likes the name but did mention, we call our son Finn (aka just shorten his name) … and it may sound similar to Fern when we say it and vice versa

is it just our accent or now when everyone thinks , is it too similar?

We do call him Finley, but yea his nickname is Fin/Finn which we. Use without thinking etc

This thread has reminded me of someone I know. 2 of the DC have names like Charles (boy) and Charlie (girl). They are half siblings. Not using the actual names as there's probably a thread on MN about it.

ammyy · 10/10/2023 16:36

Finn and Fern is in my opinion a bit too matchy matchy

Menopausalmum48 · 10/10/2023 18:34

It does have a bit of a Topsy and Tim vibe, but personally I like it.

I know quite a few sibling sets with the same initial and it sounds fine.

VeridicalVagabond · 10/10/2023 18:36

They do sound a bit like characters from a kids TV show who have a pet dragon that lives at the bottom of the garden or something, but I still think they're good names.

SkaneTos · 10/10/2023 18:40

I know a family with 7 kids, all the names start with the letter A!

One reason why not would be that you can't just write their initial when you write them a note in the future Like, "L, please empty the dishwasher", because it could mean either person with that initial. So you would have to write the whole name. But that is not a big deal.

Also, Finley/Finn and Ferne/Fern are lovely names!

Hibernatalie · 10/10/2023 18:44

My kids have the same initial and are 2 years apart, so I'm biased, but no problem from what I can see.

scrivette · 10/10/2023 19:04

My brother and I had names that started with the same initial and were the same amount of letters - it didn't ever cause any issues.

caringcarer · 10/10/2023 19:06

My DH had the same initials as both his patients and one brother. No middle names. He used to hate his father insisting on opening all male with just the initial and not full first name.

trampoline123 · 10/10/2023 19:07

We are 3 Ms - not really been a problem tbh, apart from if we got post that was to M Surname.

theduchessofspork · 10/10/2023 19:09

I don’t mind matching initials particularly, but Finlay and Fern is a bit matchy matchy cute (whereas say Anna and Alexander is not)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/10/2023 23:19

My brother, husband and daughter and I all have the save first two initials. Wet I lived with my brother we had the same surname, now I live with dh and I've got their surname (albeit a different one). I have lots of experience of sharing initials - really not a problem!

Amidlifecrisis · 13/10/2023 11:01

I think Finn and Fern are just too close/sound to similar.

Fred and Fern or Fin and Freya would be fine.

I know of a similar situation.

The second wife was set on a name that was incredibly similar to the name of her husband´s daughter from a previous relationship.

Think along the lines of DD1 being Mina and the second wife being completely set on the name Nina. They ultimately went with a longer version. Not unlike Antonina instead of Nina for example.

(not the real names either, btw)

UnRavellingFast · 15/10/2023 15:18

I love the sound of Finn, very cute. If you love the name Fern you should go for it. It could become confusing but you’ll probably find a way round it.

Finn and Freya are gorgeous names.

KirstenBlest · 15/10/2023 16:10

@PumpkinsAndCoconuts , my example isn't all that good, because Charlie for a girl isn't that unusual, whereas the actual name used definitely sounds male and isn't much used for boys and not at all for girls AFAIK.
