Hi folks, due in a few weeks now with a little boy and having a full on panic about what to name our little one.
Both myself and husband are Irish and are keen to look toward an Irish name, but cannot for the life of us settle on anything!
Front runner seems to be Oisin but I'm not completely sold, so any suggestions welcome x

Rían which means kingly
Croí which means my heart
Which way would you pronounce Oísin, sounding like ocean or useen

FayCarew · 19/07/2024 08:53

@Nutsabouttopic , Oisin is not pronounced Ocean.

All of these are incorrect. Please check your information before posting.

KirstenBlest · 19/07/2024 09:19

@Nutsabouttopic , did you get those from some baby name site? They're not reliable. Your fada was in the wrong place.

Not one of Oisin, Ossian(Scottish) or Osian (Welsh) sounds like Ocean. If you want to suggest Ocean as a name, do not try to foist the sound on a completely different name.

** apologies for my missing fada.

They're not all incorrect, Rían does indeed mean king, Croí does mean heart, (though I've never heard it used for a boy), Oisín yes is spelled and pronounced wrong

Croí doesn't mean 'my heart' as pp said though.
That's 'mo chroí '.

Rían doesn't actually need a fada and the name is so old the meaning has been lost. Rian is still pronounced Ree-un, to rhyme with Cian, dian, grian - none of which have fadas either.

Lots of people do spell Rian with a fada and take it to mean 'little king' or similar (though it should really have two fadas, Ríán, in that case). But the meaning is actually unknown and is probably not related to king. The surname Ó Riain (Ryan) does not have a fada on i.

This is an old thread anyway.

They are all incorrect. King is ‘rí’. No one is very sure where Ryan, O’Riain and cognates etc emerged from etymologically. ‘Banríon’ (queen) might be involved in ‘Rian’.

‘My heart’ would be ‘mo chroí’, and, if Croí is ever used as a name it’s by the kind of people who read those batshit US baby name websites that invent name etymologies.

And neither pronunciation of Oisín is correct in any part of Ireland.

NervousSubject · 19/07/2024 10:53

And yes to fadas being thrown around like confetti or omitted where needed.
