What are your views about having Elizabeth on the birth certificate with nickname Betsy for when they are young? Both (and Betty) are family names.
Thank you x

Elizabeth is a classic.
I personally like Betty the most of all the Elizabeth shortenings, but Betsy is perfectly good.

MerryChristmasToYou · 08/10/2023 19:52

@ArcticBells , Bettina and Betsy are both diminutives of Elizabeth

Hibernatalie · 08/10/2023 19:58

Love it!!!

If you want Betsy, I eoukd call her Betsy
Nicknames are organic and she may end up lizzy, liz or libby

Agree with a pp that this isn't true of diminutives rather than nicknames. There were loads of Katies in the 80s who were actually Katherines - I don't know any that suddenly changed to Kath or whatever. Same with Lotties not suddenly becoming Charlies.

Love it. Love all the names associated with Elizabeth.

I like it. Also Bess is nice. I also have an Elizabeth but she's a lizzie.

Cowlover89 · 08/10/2023 22:10

Don't like it personally

ThreeLeggedPug · 08/10/2023 22:11

Like it

Super cute. I know a teen Betsy and it's suited her at every age.

Alwaysanotherwine · 08/10/2023 22:16

Don’t like Betsy

it’s trying too hard and isn’t ‘pretty’ like Elizabeth

im also not fan of choosing nickname then working backward

dd goes by a shortened nickname but that wasn’t our choice of daily name - we wanted the longer version

had my preference been there nickname, id have just named her that!

groovergirl · 09/10/2023 01:30

Elizabeth is a grand name, not just for its queenly associations but for its multitude of nn. If I had this name I'd be nn Libby. But Betsy sounds fresh for the new generation.

Just go with Elizabeth, OP, and let her enjoy the nn. She might be Betsy at home and Lizzie at school. My DD is Virginia, Ginny or Gin-Gins to her friends, Bubsy at home. She rolls with it and likes her different personas. I go by various forms of my own classic name.

Betsy is short for Betina not Elizabeth

I disagree. Bettina (and Bettina) is a German diminutive of Elisabeth.

XelaM · 09/10/2023 01:41

I love Elizabeth and have named my daughter that, but she absolutely hates the long form for some reason and goes by Lizzie

HeadacheEarthquake · 09/10/2023 01:43

I'm Elizabeth and sorry to say, I hate it.

I've always been called Lisa as a shortened form and don't like it either.

Middle name hannah and also hate that.

Thinking of changing it by DP to Leisa, Leise or Lissa.

Also hate liz, Beth and all the associated:/

XelaM · 09/10/2023 02:21

Aren't these just different nicknames for Elizabeth? Although I wouldn't know how to pronounce Leisa unless it's pronounced like Liza?

My daughter is Lisa at home (pronounced Leeza as we're Eastern European)

EmmaPaella · 09/10/2023 02:39

I know a little Betsy, it’s sweet but for me, Bet/Betsy/Bettys are old ladies.

Bette is probably my favourite of those versions. (But I prefer Belle)

lljkk · 09/10/2023 03:30

You can try but see how it goes...

I knew an Elizabeth who loathed her family name (Betty).
Another Elizabeth with nn Lisa who changed her name to something completely different (like Tracy...)

DreamTheMoors · 09/10/2023 03:37

CowboyJoanna · 05/10/2023 20:09

"Betsy" sounds old fashioned...
How about Beth? Or Libby? Lizzie?

My name is Elizabeth. My nickname is Betsy.

I’m not 110.

TheBirdintheCave · 09/10/2023 07:12

This is my least favourite diminutive of Elizabeth. There's just something about the sound that grinds on me BUT there's nothing fundamentally wrong with it so if you like it, go for it :)

Yes although I don't want to change the name people know me by, I want to get rid of Elizabeth

Leise or leisa I don't mind, pronounced ly-za
