Hugh or Teddy/Theodore

We are expecting our first baby in next 2 weeks and are really struggling with boys names!

We think we have narrowed it down to either Hugh or Teddy/Ted (full name Theodore).

We don’t like how popular Theodore is now but are equally worried Hugh has become too unpopular!!

Husband’s name is Patrick which I love!

What do people think? Any suggestions appreciated!

My ex's stepfather was called Hugh. Ex couldn't stand him and frequently referred to him as "Hugh - rinal". So for that reason only I'd vote Theodore.

Softnatural · 04/10/2023 18:57

Edward to also shortened to Ted or Teddy, if that helps.

cherryassam · 04/10/2023 19:00

I was also going to suggest Edward as a way of getting Ted/Teddy - or one of the other Ed- names: Edwin, Edgar, Edmund etc.

I don’t love Hugh as a name personally but it’s not offensive in anyway. Hugo also seems to be somewhat popular here at the moment?

Ralph feels similar in vibe to Hugh.

SmokedCheese · 04/10/2023 19:01

i like Huw rather then Hugh. There’s Hugo if you prefer?

theduchessofspork · 04/10/2023 19:19

I like Hugh.. I don’t think it’s as popular as Teddy and Theo

KirstenBlest · 04/10/2023 19:40

Not Theo or Theodore, and definitely not Teddy.

Songbird74 · 04/10/2023 20:01

@LittleGreenDuck that did make me laugh! OP, I like Theo / Theodore but Teddy is too childish, especially if your DS turns into a 6 foot burly rugby player.

peaceinourtime · 06/10/2023 10:00

they are both super popular names.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 06/10/2023 10:05

Hugh easily Teddy is too popular and too childish for me and Ted sounds like an old man….

If you do want Teddy I agree with others go Edward and then he can be Teddy/Ted/Ed when he is older

KirstenBlest · 06/10/2023 15:30

@peaceinourtime , according to Darkgreener, Hugh isn't popular,never mind super popular (#431)
Babies called Hugh in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
Teddy is #26, Theodore is #11, Theo is #15, Edward is #29

mumtotwox · 06/10/2023 17:11

Not the biggest fan of either. I think it's because I hear them so often ☹️

Cowlover89 · 06/10/2023 17:12

Hugh

muddyford · 06/10/2023 17:22

Hugh

SemperIdem · 06/10/2023 17:57

Theodore nn Theo/Teddy is extremely popular.

I don’t like Hugh but do like Huw.

EddieVedderSingsToMe · 06/10/2023 18:42

I have an 8 year old Teddy. We chose Edward as his proper name so he could change it to Ed, Ted, Eddie, etc when he’s older if Teddy felt too babyish. He prefers Ted at the moment and his best friends since Reception are Ed and Fred which is hilarious. Teddy is quite popular now. 3 in his school. We also have a 7 year old Ralph and that name is gaining popularity too. Good luck with the birth!

Daisylookslost · 06/10/2023 18:55

Teddy - it’s such a sweet name which can be shortened to Ted. I don’t really like Hugh it reminds me of an older man. Hugo slightly better.

But I would go for the name that shortens to this which is believe us Edward or Ed_. I love Edwin! Then could be Eddy or Ed. I’m basically agreeing with many people here but hey ho.

AuntieStella · 06/10/2023 19:00

I'd choose Hugh

I prefer Ted/Teddy as nn for Edward

TheBushOfYourGarden · 06/10/2023 21:41

Teddy!

SurvivingJust1 · 14/10/2023 09:28

There's 4 Teddy's (only one is a Theodore) and a 2 Theo's across our two Reception classes at school.
No Hugh's which sounds a bit refreshing

EllaWallace · 14/10/2023 09:34

Hugh is a family name and I personally love it. A classic ❤️

Pemba · 15/10/2023 10:20

A bit meh about these names but they are inoffensive. I prefer Theodore of the two, although in recent years it's become so popular.

I'm not really a fan of the sound of Hugh, and besides in some accents it becomes 'Hoo'.

But whichever one you choose there will be other Theodores or Hughs at school. Could you think of something more original or maybe more classic?
