I live in Greece, My husband is Greek & our first born was Named Dimitris after his father (traditionally). Now we're expecting a baby girl & plan to name her Eleni (Lena) after his mother, but I would like to make a tribute to my mum too who is English called Nicola.
In Greece the closest name to Nicola would be Nikol, and I really like the sound of Eleni-Nikol. But my husband is struggling with the fact that Greeks generally speaking don't use middle names or two names. He just doesn't really get it but is happy for me to name her that if it's what I want.

I'd just like to know from anyone with Greek roots if you think this might cause baby girl any issues in later life? Even for paperwork sake, or at school etc? Would it be a reason to tease or something?
I know quite a few people with two names, like 'Maria Christina' etc, but I'm not sure if it's for more religious purposes.

(Side note, we won't be baptising her)

A different one. I know from a former manager who had Greek parents who advised like you said that middle names aren’t a Greek thing.

Planning on a third child? Your dms name could be varied to suit a boy or girl

It's a possibility, but to be honest I'd really like to use it together anyway.

My first born boy is named after Greek grandfather.. I gave him a random middle name. My daughter has my mother in law's name which luckily is similar to my mums name. My daughter also has three middle names. My post natal hormones made me give her a middle name of my choice in hospital then at her baptism in Greece the godmother (dh aunt) wanted to give my daughter a middle name for an uncle who died - Nikos. So my daughter got Nikoletta. I then decided if godmother could do that then I would add another name after my brother who died (this was in the church ten mins before service!) My third baby another boy has my dads name and no middle name.
You can definitely give a middle name. I am Scottish so they got used to my ways! Even though we are divorced I kept my mother in law as she was so lovely and also very tolerant and open minded of the foreign wife Grin

Also the extra names never caused any issue at school or with ID now that they are adults. (We moved back to the UK pre secondary school but they have Greek passports etc)

Lovely choice of name OP (I am biased!) 😉
I do live in the UK but am Greek on my father's side and actually have 2 middle names chosen by my (Scottish) mother. I am told nobody in the family batted an eyelid, they were more preoccupied by following traditions around first names (naming for grandparents etc). I would say double-barrelled first names are very unusual however if you are simply using it as a middle name I would doubt you'd encounter issues.

It’s not unheard of to use a middle name (although it’s maybe less common than here) but I’ve never come across anyone with a double-barrelled name…

also echo @Norachance - Nicoletta/Nikoletta! (Female form of Nikos) is a great alternative name

Hellas · 05/10/2023 20:00

Also, I would imagine the people with two names are to distinguish themselves from others with the same name (like Muslim boys and Mohammed) OR where parents have felt obliged to give their kids a grandparent’s name that they don’t like 😂

My son has a middle name and it confuses everyone. They think his middle name is his first name. His middle name is actually more Greek sounding than his first name so maybe that doesn't help.

My dad is greek. I have 3 children, all with middle names. It's not Greek traditions but it really doesn't matter. My son is Theo Dmitri Alexander. Just don't make it double barreled with a -

Thank you everyone!
I'm sticking with it! Not double barrelled as you've all mentioned, but as a middle name.
