So, i've already picked a name for our little girl for when she's born and cant stop thinking about the fact, her first name im going to make double barrelled as all the names I want to use would just make her middle name seem to long or not work together/sound right. So out of one of them names will be part of her barrelled first name but it's got me thinking for like the birth certificate part ect(I know I think to far ahead) 😂 but will I need to use a hyphen in the first name or not? Will that make her first name look separated if you know what I'm trying to say? 🤦‍♀️ i just dont know 🤷‍♀️ 🤣

Your post doesn't read very clearly @MummyTo4BoysXXXX .
Have I got this right?
You have selected a first name and a few middle names for your baby daughter who is due soon.
How many names have you selected?
Are you planning on hyphenating the first name with one of the middle names, or are you planning to split the first name into two names joined with a hyphen?
How many middle names will she have?

Is it something like:
Eve-Lyn Sophia Isla Rose Surname (1)
or
Evelyn-Sophia Isla Rose Surname (2)
or
Evelynsophia Isla Rose Surname (3)
or
Evelyn Sophia Isla Rose Surname (4)

(substitute with the actual names, Evelyn used as it can be two actual names)

My opinion:
(1) Ditch the hyphen
(2) Ditch the hyphen
(3) The joined up name is awful
(4) Too many middle names. If one is a filler name (Rose/May/Grace/Ann/Jane etc) ditch it. Even if you love a name now, you might not love it when name trends change.

If it's something completely different like
Jane Elizabeth Mary Catherine Lydia Bennett then leave it as it is, but she'll be Jane Bennett to everyone apart from you.

If you post the names you have in mind, we can probably give better advice.
If you don't want to say the actual names, use ones that are similar.

No a hyphen will make the name joined rather than separated.
There is also the option of combining the names with no hyphen eg (Annierose) rather than Annie-Rose.

Hyphenated double barrelled first names are awful. I ditched mine as soon as I started school, the only remaining trace of it now is on my birth certificate (cringe). Don’t do it.

MummyTo4BoysXXXX · 30/09/2023 17:41

@InTheRainOnATrain why are they awful in your opinion? May I ask x

They’re quite faddy tbh . Every girl is something -Rose/Grace/May.

Schools are full of Evie-Mays or Ella-Rose or Lily-Rose or Ava-Graces.

Daffodilwoman · 30/09/2023 19:00

I wouldn’t give a child too many names. Nobody, absolutely nobody other than you and her dad will use them. However, she will have to declare them on all official documents. This can be a pain. As for hyphenated names do it if you want to.
I dislike names which are mashed together for example Carryanne. I prefer. Carry-Anne.

MerryChristmasToYou · 30/09/2023 19:31

@MummyTo4BoysXXXX , thanks for PMing me and for sharing the names. The first name is unusual so I'll try to use something of a fairly similar nature. One of the middle names is outside the top 150 names.

The name that would be hyphenated with the first name is Rose.

The full name will be something like Dahlia Rose Lucy Maisie Smith.

Dahlia and Rose are both flowers but not related. Hyphenating them seems a bit silly, makes no sense and seems confusing.

Most of the hyphenated names in current use seem to be Something-Rose or Something-May. I find Rose/May/Grace as a middle name a bit meaningless and just a middle name for the sake of it, so I'd remove it.

I think that two middle names is a bit too much, and the two -ie/-y names a bit clunky but middle names aren't used much, so they could be ok. The 'Maisie' is OP's own name, so I'd remove it. The little girl will always be 'Maisie''s daughter. The 'Lucy' is a family name.

I'd go with Dahlia Lucy Smith. It looks better than
Dahlia Rose Lucy Maisie Smith.

(OP's name is classier than Maisie)

Dahlia-Rose Smith will appear as Smith, Dahlia-Rose on lists, work badges etc. If the surname is long, the first name will be truncated
e.g Smithson - Dahlia-Ro

MerryChristmasToYou · 30/09/2023 19:40

I'd only hyphenate names if both were always going to be used, and can't think of many that are other than Anne-Marie, Sally-Anne and Mary-Anne. The Emma-Louises and Sarah-Janes I know are Emma and Sarah.
A friend's daughter is something like Fern-Emma and she's been Fern since she was in the Reception class (not the actual name but something that sounds just as bad tacked with Emma)

MerryChristmasToYou · 30/09/2023 19:43

I don't particularly like Anne-Marie, and dislike Sally-Anne and Mary-Anne but they are names of people I like. Anne, Sally and Mary are such nice names on their own.

Just don’t use a hyphen

They are generally seen as low rent and it won’t do her any favours in life
