Baby Brother for Caoimhe

DD’s name is Caoimhe and I still love it, but I just haven’t fallen in love with any boys names.

I am pregnant with a little boy who is due in 5 weeks and I have no clue what to call him!

No boy’s names really stand out to me.

DH would prefer an Irish name, I don’t really have a preference, as I just seem to be struggling to find anything that I like!

All suggestions are welcome.

Isn't Séimí just a short form of Séamus?

I feel like Séimí could solve my Sé being too short dilemma.

Séimí is lovely and is a diminutive for Séamus - and its English equivalent would exactly be like Jamie would be for James.

You can't really use Sé and claim it as an Irish name - it is the Irish word for he.

Fynn suggested upthread is not an Irish name but Fionn is lovely.

BattleofBeamfleot · 27/09/2023 07:20

Oscar is lovely too and I don't think most people know it's Irish (Oscar was the son of Oisín and grandson of Fionn Mac Cumhail).

In Irish we'd say UH-sker but you don't have to pronounce it that way if you don't want to.

Fynn is not an Irish name (there's no Y in the irish alphabet) but Fionn is lovely and Finn is an acceptable anglicisation, although he WILL get people calling him Finlay and making little comments about "the trend for christening children with nicknames" if he grows up in the UK.

Sé is an Irish name. Used to be spelt Séaghdha, pronounced Sé.
Sé is often used as nn for Séamas.
Sé means six, he, and sounds like “it’s him”. To say “he is sé” you’d say “s’é Sé”. (Shay shay).

LizzieAnt · 27/09/2023 08:34

It's also a surname, Ó Sé, anglicised O'Shea, older spelling Ó Séaghdha.
The people I know with the name spell it Shay though. Some use it as a form of James (via Séamus) ie James is on the birth cert.

My DS is Pádraig, others we looks at were Ruairí, Donnacha, Seamus, Seán, Oscar.

Brody is very close to my Irish surname and to me seems like a very American name.

Hazel444 · 27/09/2023 12:58

Lorcan?

sleepymama3 · 27/09/2023 13:01

Séamus immediately jumps out, and shorten to Séimí as explained above.
Hugh
Dara (also means 'second' and I know a few second children called Dara).
Ronan
Ciarán
Aidan, if you liked Aodhan?
Patrick

I love Seamus and also the one that sounds like Tiger without the er but I'm unsure how to spell it.

Tadgh is the name you are referring to.

It's Tadhg, not Tadgh.
The spelling does get mixed up a lot.

Sorry @Darkherds, my error.

Enda

BabyAnon · 27/09/2023 15:24

I do also like Enda, but I work with a man named Enda and feel like it’s a bit weird to name my baby his name.

I think I like Séimí, NN Sé so I’ll see what DH thinks.

100% girls names are easier to pick than boys names!
