Would you say that Samantha is dated? What would you think of a baby Samantha?

We don't hate Sam, but we'd prefer if people called her Samantha. Too long?

I kind of dislike Sammy, is that an issue? Sam I don't mind (even though I'd prefer Samantha), but Sammy is really not my favourite.

Other options are Sabrina and Kiera as well as Holly and Poppy.

I loved Isabella and Eva (Eva-Marie, Eva-Maria) for a while, but now they'll likely be middle names.

Sam is quite a popular non-binary choice at my daughter's school (chosen by the kids not the parents) so I don't think it's outdated.
Samantha is a bit old fashioned but probably due an revival. My first connotation is for Sam Cam, but as soon as it's your babies name it will be hers not anyone else's.

suzettenoisette · 24/09/2023 16:32

I've never heard of Sam Cam, but I'll google it.

Thanks!

I really like Samantha, but it WILL get shortened to Sammy by a lot of people.

PurpleChrayne · 24/09/2023 16:44

I love the name Samantha. Definitely due a resurgence!

TooOldForThisNonsense · 24/09/2023 16:45

Sam Cam = Samantha Cameron, David Cameron’s wife

its ok

BeaLola · 24/09/2023 16:48

I do like Samantha but can see it getting shortened all the time

Looking at your other likes how about Serena ?

BeaLola · 24/09/2023 16:48

Or Eve

CornishGem1975 · 24/09/2023 16:50

I'd never make a Samantha Cameron connection from 'Samantha'. Wouldn't not be my first thought. DD had a friend called Samantha and she's 18 now, also my friends daughter is Samantha/Sammy and she is 11.

EllieQ · 24/09/2023 16:52

I like the name, but I think of it as one of those 60s/ 70s names that haven’t had a revival - Barbara, Louise, Claire, Lisa etc. Maybe it’s time for them to come back into fashion!

I think the previous poster is referring to Samantha Cameron, David Cameron’s wife. The other famous Samantha that comes to mind is Sam Fox, but I suspect younger people won’t know who she is.

Roselilly36 · 24/09/2023 16:52

I like the name Samantha, it will get shortened, I don’t think of Samantha Cameron at all, makes me think of the gorgeous Samantha Fox.

MrsSamR · 24/09/2023 16:54

My name is Samantha (as you could probably tell from my username) - I did get called Sammy quite a lot by family when I was very young but I have always hated it and it lessened over the years for this reason!

I go by Sam but also Samantha and have always been fairly indifferent to my name. I was born in the 80s when it was quite popular (there were 3 in my class at junior school!) but I haven't met many since so it's probably due a resurgence!

MrsSamR · 24/09/2023 16:55

There's the Olaf reference to Samantha in Frozen 2 which my DD always finds funny as it's Mummy's name!

I love it but I’m in my 50s so not cool. My first thought these days is Samantha jones in sex and the city

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 24/09/2023 17:05

I'm a 40 odd year old Samantha, it's not a very popular name, but it's done me ok- iv had sammy growing up and still from my parents and neices and nephews call me aunty sammy, but with my friends it's sam. I like it- it's just a pity I got a long and old fashion middle name too!

BoleynMemories13 · 24/09/2023 17:38

Samantha was incredibly popular when I was at school (90s/00s), so 80s babies who are now mid 30s and above. By the time we were 9ish they all went by Sam so I'd say the likelihood of her wanting to be Samantha past being a little girl is unlikely. It does seem to be one of those names which inevitably gets shortened (and even if you don't like Sammy, she might, so worth bearing in mind).

It does feel dated to me (unlike Samuel for a boy, which feels more timeless) but obviously it's up to you.

smilesup · 24/09/2023 17:46

I'm afraid I've always hated it, the rhythm and rhyming of the "Sa" "ma" "tha" makes me feel bleugh also I live in a place where people say fa instead of tha. So it drives me a bit insane. I am weird though.

useitorlose · 24/09/2023 17:55

My best friend in primary school was Samantha- we are 55 now!

NoraLuka · 24/09/2023 17:59

I don’t like it purely because with my accent it’s kind of Smanfer. When people from other areas say it, it’s nice!

ElderMillenials · 24/09/2023 18:01

It's definitely one due for a revival. I've known a few Samantha's and when shortened it's always to Sam, the only sammy I've ever known was as her first name (so not a shortened version of anything and agree it's not great).

I was talking to my DD about names, and Samantha is one of those great ones that isn't 'out there' or yoonique, also not massively popular but you can still find it on a pencil. Kind of a sweet spot.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 24/09/2023 18:03

Well it makes me think of a page three girl. So it's not a very classy name to me.... But then I'm really old! 🤣

Bubblemoons · 24/09/2023 18:07

Samantha feels dated to me. It was very popular in the 80’s then quickly went out of fashion https://www.ons.gov.uk/visualisations/dvc363/babyindex.html#1,Samantha

I dislike it. And yes to Smanfer 😁as a pp wrote.
However I don’t know any who aren’t called Sam by secondary school.

jays · 24/09/2023 18:25

To me, Samantha with always be f@cking fabulous! I adore the name!

bloodyeffinnora · 24/09/2023 18:53
