Honest opinions on the name Emmeline (pronounced Emma-leen) please.

Both DH and I love it but concerned about:

  1. a lifetime of having to say ‘it’s Emmeline, not Emily’;
  2. baby (don’t actually know if it’s a girl yet) will have my surname (and DH surname as a middle name) - don’t know if the Pankhurst associations makes the whole package - including maternal surname - a bit too feminist ?! Should add am a loud and proud feminist myself.

Thanks all

Lovely name go for it :)

toastofthetown · 22/09/2023 12:43

I really don’t like it. It’s clunky sounding and dull to me. Just blends into the sea of Emilys Emmas, and Emilias. It’s decently popular though, with over a hundred born each year, so objectively it’s not problematic.

Liv999 · 22/09/2023 13:31

It's beautiful, one of my favourites, so much nicer than Emily or Emma, I do agree you prob will have to correct people but it wouldn't put me off personally

wellingtonsandwaffles · 22/09/2023 13:33

I love it. People who know you will quickly get it right, and people who don’t will get names wrong anyway. Me, my husband and my son all have normal well known names and yet we all regularly have others mishearing / mispronouncing etc!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/09/2023 13:38

I like it, although it does make me think of the Hot Chocolate song Emma. I don't think it's a difficult name or would cause confusion with Emily, although I suppose that depends how you say it. I'm hearing it like Errol Brown sings it.

Brightredtulips · 22/09/2023 13:41

As soon as I read the name the Hot Chocolate song came into my head. Probably says more about me though and my age. I wouldn't worry about that connection.

CountingDownTheHours · 22/09/2023 13:43

I like it, and its pretty common in France. I think you'd have to emphasise the Leen bit a little so it didn't get confused with Emily.

RosaElize · 22/09/2023 13:47

I really really like it… despite having three DD’s myself, never used it because i just can’t cope with the “leen” or “line” thing… if you are confident with the pronunciation you want I think it is a beautiful name

GingembreThe · 22/09/2023 13:56

I love it.

Given that it appears quite frequently as a suggestion on the MN name boards, I don't think it's that out there. There were 148 Emmelines born last year.

17caterpillars1mouse · 22/09/2023 14:26

I really like it.

PaprikaPlease · 22/09/2023 14:35

Love the Pankhurst connection though sounds frilly to my ears

MargotBamborough · 22/09/2023 14:36

Lovely name, OP.

And there's no such thing as "too feminist". 😊

beachdays27 · 22/09/2023 14:37

I don't think having mum's surname will make people think feminist, but she would spend her whole life saying 'yes like Emmeline Pankhurst' 🤷‍♀️

Graciebobcat · 22/09/2023 14:38

I like it and it could be abbreviated easily too.

BelindaBears · 22/09/2023 14:38

I like it. I know one so may be biased! She goes by Emme (Emmy) 90% of the time though.

peaceinourtime · 22/09/2023 14:53

It’s nice, she will probably wind up being called Emmie, so prepare yourself. A plus for using your last name for your child.

VeryQuaintIrene · 22/09/2023 14:54

I have a charming cat called Emmeline, so I say absolutely!

SallyWD · 22/09/2023 14:59

It's one of my top 3 girls names! It's beautiful - elegant, strong, feminine. I quite like Emmie too as a nn. I don't think they'll always be saying "it's Emmeline not Emily" because the endings sound quite different. They'll just emphasise the "line" part when they fussy meet people.

Anoisagusaris · 22/09/2023 15:01

I’ve loved it since meeting a stunning English girl called Emmeline in my Irish university. I would have called DD it only my sister had an Emily already.

curaçao · 22/09/2023 15:03

Nice name- old fashioned.

PickledScrump · 22/09/2023 15:10

Not a fan personally, and I’d pronounce it “line” not “leen”

StillWantingADog · 22/09/2023 15:12

I love it and there is good nn potential with Emme or Emmy

Brandyb · 22/09/2023 15:13

Lovely in itself and as a nod to Pankhurst, and I think Emmy is lovely as a contraction too

catmom93 · 22/09/2023 15:15

I love it, and u don't think people will make the connection of mum's surname + Emmeline = rampant feminist. Although it's a cool connection 😁

KirstenBlest · 22/09/2023 18:13

Not keen. Emma is lovely, Emily is fine. Emmeline a bit too fussy for me.
