What are your thoughts on Julian?

Too dated or due a come back?

Also do you think it risks being shortened to J. I really don't want a name that is shortened to J so have already ruled out many J names, but Julian seems safer?

I’ve always thought of it as a posh name. However, I know 2 Julian’s both in their 50s one is definitely not posh. He has a very down to earth nature and is a manual worker. Both go by Julian.

schnubbins · 19/09/2023 19:21

Love it!

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 19/09/2023 21:46

King Julien 🦝

BadHairBae · 19/09/2023 21:47

I love it

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 20/09/2023 00:11

Great name. Roman. Caesar!

The one I loved was Ju to me, otherwise Julian. Never Jules.

givemeasunnyday · 20/09/2023 01:32

It's a great name.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 20/09/2023 09:37

I like Julian
Hate Ju or June's though.

StamppotAndGravy · 20/09/2023 12:25

I like Jolyon better because the pronunciation is more obvious and Joly is nicer than Jules. I know 3 Julians. One's a dick (pronounced the English way, Julian, not dick ;), one's French and lovely and the other is German pronounced Yulian and also lovely, but that's 3 different pronunciations

Supercat100 · 20/09/2023 12:36

Love it. And Jolyon, though that's been spoilt by the ghastly Jolyon Maugham.

TeeBee · 20/09/2023 12:37

It makes me think of Stath Lets Flats. The annoying one who was killed off in the last series.

julesagainstana · 22/09/2023 14:47

my name ! (16 y/o, a bit young to be here but had to give my two cents), probably a more unusual name, dunno anyone younger than me with it except for, weirdly enough 3 Brazilian boys (unrelated to each other). cultural thing perhaps? either way, its a name we all know, but it isn't another William with 5 in every class.

Vivi0 · 22/09/2023 14:55

I love this name. It’s one of my favourites.

I wouldn’t say it is outdated, it’s a Classic name, but uncommon.

Katiesaidthat · 22/09/2023 15:34

Why a problem with names that can be shortened? I love i can shorten my name. Normal acquaintances call me my name, people who are very close call me my short name. I like it. I like Julian, but would call him Jude...

Comedycook · 22/09/2023 15:38

Bookish, wet, useless in a fight

Wolfricbriandumbledore · 22/09/2023 15:49

I only like it for a girl (as in Julian of Norwich) — it was only used for girls for much of its history.

For some reason, when it’s used for boys, it reminds me solely of pompous, self-important, all-round insufferable Julian in the Famous Five, who, had he ever grown up past the age of 13, would have turned into the kind of bluff, gouty, golf-playing Tory local councillor who has a prized photo of himself having a pint with Nigel Farage, and thinks UKIP ‘had a point’.

Julius is nice?

MargotBamborough · 22/09/2023 18:19

I like it. I used to strongly associate it with Julian Clary but I doubt anyone in your child's generation is likely to have heard of him.

I think it's much nicer than Jolyon, which I used to associate with the Forsyte Saga and now associate with the kimono wearing, fox killing lawyer Jolyon Maugham.

975zyx · 22/09/2023 18:24

Reminds me too much of the Ghosts character, who is also a stereotypical Julian to me.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 22/09/2023 18:26

Famous Five!

FourStringsNoWaiting · 22/09/2023 18:28

I like Julian. DD would've been Julian had she been a boy, after my mum (Julie) and Julian of Norwich

Mumofmarauders · 22/09/2023 18:30

I know an eight year old boy called Julian and he likes his name. I like it too! (It's actually my middle name because according to my folks in the Middle Ages it was a unisex name and there is a famous Saint Julian of Norwich who was a woman. All of which is true but very much not a unisex name now or in the 80s and 90s when I was explaining it in the playground again and again...!)
