Is this middle name too strange?

Thinking of calling our daughter Olivia or Isobel.

We wanted a unique and simple middle name with Olivia or Isobel as both names are considered more common.

Would love your thoughts on the following first/middle name combos:

Olivia Bloom
Isobel Bloom

Too strange?

Thank you

I love both your first names, and I am open to more unusual middle names , but not a fan of Bloom sorry.

It's not that it's too strange, it's just (to me) a bit of a naff name.

To me it sounds a bit like it's trying too hard/ a bit sentimental or cheesy or something about seeing her 'Bloom' as her parents. I'm not a fan.

Having said that, most people don't really even know each others middle names, so if you like it, it really doesn't matter too much! ;)

Soontobemummaagain · 14/09/2023 05:33

Hmmmm, first of all, if you love the name bloom, go for it. You asked opinions so here goes. I'll start by saying I'm a scientist and my kids have traditional names that many probably think are boring (but we love). So each to their own. Our kids do have more unusual middle names.

For isobel bloom I think it's all the b's and l's, i find it clunky to say. But just not sure on bloom at all really. Might be my grandparents saying sarcastically "that's blooming brilliant" or when people say you're blooming in pregnancy, I kinda feel it means opening out/ fat. I just am not sure it has the best ring to it and jars a little with your pretty first names. Sorry. Be interested to hear what others think.

Strange no
Middle names no.

I know a little girl who's first name is Bloom and you know what, it really suits her. I think it does work as a middle name.

Ooh that's quite interesting. I wonder if my comment above is a bit unfair because I think of bloom as an adjective, rather than name/ noun. Often it's when you know someone that you start loving a name.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/09/2023 10:27

If I met Olivia Bloom Smith I'd assume the surname was Bloom-Smith tbh. It's VERY surnamey.

How about Blossom?

AuntieStella · 14/09/2023 10:30

I think you can stick anything in the middle, no matter how strange.

I agree with pp that Isobel Bloom is a bit too clunky, so would go with Olivia (or change to Isobel Blossom)

Paynefully · 14/09/2023 10:32

I immediately thought of Orlando bloom.

Are you a fan of James Joyce? Because otherwise……

Mirabai · 14/09/2023 10:37

Isobel Olivia or Olivia Isobel are great though.

I wondered that but why wouldn’t you just use Molly?

BarnacleBeasley · 14/09/2023 10:38

I would assume it was a family surname.

Topseyt123 · 14/09/2023 10:41

I'd assume it was a surname. As a middle name then yes, I would find it odd.

CurlewKate · 14/09/2023 10:45

When people say nobody pays any attention to middle names-that really isn't the case. Maybe amongst adults- but at about year 3/4, kids, particularly girls in my experience, go through a phase of experimenting with names- writing them backwards, making anagrams and monograms and so on. So an unusual middle name will certainly draw attention. That's not a bad thing- but it's worth thinking about.

CurlewKate · 14/09/2023 10:48

Incidentally, bloom automatically goes with algal in my head-sorry. And as climate change ramps up probably more so....

Dragonsandcats · 14/09/2023 10:50

i think it’s quite sweet. I’d also just assume it was a family surname.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/09/2023 10:53

I would assume it was your maiden name, I wouldn't consider that strange.

WhatapityWapiti · 14/09/2023 11:14

Depends what it signifies. I’d assume it was a family surname, possibly signifying Jewish roots.

If you are just picking it because of the association with flowers then it’s a bit odd. But middle names can be as odd as you like really.
