Alicia or Alice?

We love them both, with the nickname 'Lissie' but can't decide on which! Like that Alicia is a bit less common than Alice but same sounds?

Alice. I always forever the less frilly version of a name.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/09/2023 20:03

Alice. It's timeless and classic. Regrettably parents do not chose nicknames so whatever you may wish for is unlikely to happen once she's at school.

FoodFann · 13/09/2023 20:04

Alice.
I read Alicia as Aleesha.

Whichclubisittonight · 13/09/2023 20:06

Alicia.

I found Alice quite old fashioned and not very pretty, Alicia is just that bit softer.

Supercat100 · 13/09/2023 20:08

Alice is a lovely name. Alicia is a bit harsh sounding and when pronounced Aleesha, it tends towards the chavy.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 13/09/2023 20:37

Definitely Alice.
Beautiful 😍

BackT · 13/09/2023 21:09

Alicia will always be mistaken for Aleeshia which I honestly hate.

Though I must say I have never come across "Lissie" as a nickname for either (and I should know...)

SkyeBlue28 · 13/09/2023 21:31

I prefer Alicia

continentallentil · 13/09/2023 23:25

Alicia, it’s lovely

Too many Alice’s and it’s mildly twee

It’s pronounced Ah-LISS-EE-uh in the UK

You might have to correct people occasionally but not all that often

Foxesandsquirrels · 13/09/2023 23:29

No one has ever called my Alicia Aleeasha. It's always alysia? Not sure that's the correct phonetic spelling but that's how we've called her and everyone else! Even the automatic speaker at the GP.

Depends on accent. In London and SE non-RP accents (like estuary) you will hear Aleesha a lot.

Foxesandsquirrels · 13/09/2023 23:32

@continentallentil Yes that's it! I couldn't get the right spelling. No one has called my DD aleesha in the 15 years she's had the name! That's the way you'd pronounce it if it was Alisha surely?

Foxesandsquirrels · 13/09/2023 23:33

@JanesBlond we are London and for about 5 years E London and never in my DDs 15 years has she been called Aleesha with that spelling. She's always been called Ah-liss-ee-uh.

jellytotsparkles · 13/09/2023 23:36

Alice. Without a doubt, if I’d have had another daughter that’s what I’d have called her.

Beautiful & classic name that can be paired with many middle names and I actually like Lissie as a nickname for Alice.

My daughters nickname isn’t the usual one for her name but we prefer it! 😊

Nonsense.

adriftinadenofvipers · 13/09/2023 23:39

The Alicia I know is always pronounced Aleesha.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 13/09/2023 23:41

Alice. Always! So classy.

Alicia does bring the "is it Al-eee-cee-ah or Al-eesh-ah" thing.

Ivebeentogeorgia · 13/09/2023 23:43

The Alicia I know is Aleesha nickname leesh. You could have Alyssa or Elissa as alternatives with the Lissie nickname. I don’t think Alice needs a nickname and if it did I think it would end up being Al rather than Lissie

felicity is a good one for nickname Lissie. Also, Elisabeth

Theoldwoman · 14/09/2023 00:23

Alice, 100%.

Dont need a nickname , Alice is a classic, elegant name. Why alter it?

Alicia, Alisha, Alesha, Elisha, Eleisha, Alysha. Too many variables.

EmmaPaella · 14/09/2023 00:29

Alice. But I don’t like Lissy, sorry.

Alicia reminds me of Malory Towers.

KirstenBlest · 14/09/2023 14:12

I don't like Lissy either, and it's no shorter than Alice.

mrsm43s · 14/09/2023 14:29

I prefer Alicia to Alice, but the potential for the Aleesha pronunciation would put me off. Alice is a nice enough name, but rather bland to my ear, and there's so many of them round here. It seemed to take over from Matilda as the default aspirational name for the lower middle class in our area. I'm aware that name trends vary from region to region though.

LastNightAPandaSavedMyLife · 14/09/2023 20:17

Love the name Alicia (Alic-ee-ah). Much more lovely than Alice which is also pretty popular now, where as you don’t hear Alicia as much.

I have a friend called Alicia and never has a problem with people calling her Alisha by mistake.
