Jesse and Frances

Boys
Robin - ok, prefer it for a girl
Dexter - better for a dog
Nathaniel - like it, v popular now
Isaac - solid
Oliver - done to death. Alistair? Owen?
Elijah - like it, popular though. Josiah?
Jesse - love it
Caleb - half like it, half think it’s Hillbilly. Jerome?

Girls
Eloise - lovely but she’ll end up Ellie so no
Frances - love it
Julia - like it a lot
Esther - like it
Alma - bar maid, middle aged, depressed, no
Riva - rivet, or that poor girl that was murdered
Alessia - Alicia is much better
Robyn - really like it, but Robin is much nicer
Morgan - better in theory than practice
Louisa - ok, slightly prissy
Eleanor - nice but she’ll be yet another Ellie
Isla - done to death. Iona?
Evelyn. Done to death. Jocelyn?
Margot - being done to death. Marianne? Cleo?
Iris - done to death. Lois?

My absolute favourites are:

Caleb and Frances

Jessbow · 13/09/2023 08:28

Morganne femnises Morgan a bit ( or Morganna)

Tadpolle · 13/09/2023 08:35

Robin- seems a bit wet
Dexter- ok but reminds me of the tv show
Nathaniel- the "th" sound grates on me
Isaac- ok
Oliver- ok but been too popular for too long
Elijah- too biblical for my taste
Jesse- good
Caleb- bit too biblical

Girls
Eloise- ok, bit fussy
Frances- great, also Fran is great
Julia- great
Esther- great (I know it's also biblical but doesn't stand out as such)
Alma- ok
Riva- sounds made up, trying to be unique
Alessia- fussy
Robyn- not keen on y for i sounds
Morgan- dated
Louisa- fine
Eleanor- good
Isla- too popular but ok
Evelyn- ok
Margot- great
Iris- great

Boys
Robin
Dexter - I don't know why but reminds me of serial killers?!
Nathaniel - I grew up with a lot of Nathan's at school so I don't like it personally
Isaac
Oliver
Elijah - Reminds me of the actor Elijah something (Wood maybe?)
Jesse
Caleb

Girls
Eloise
Frances - Not a fan for some reason, maybe because of the character in Hey Arnold
Julia
Esther - Just don't like
Alma
Riva - Nice in theory but River is a common boys name being used at the moment, I anticipate a lot of this name in schools in a few years
Alessia
Robyn
Morgan - Not a fan
Louisa
Eleanor
Isla - Nice again but there are a lot of Isla's at the moment too
Evelyn
Margot
Iris

If I had to pick a top three..:
From your boys list; 1. Jesse (this would worry me a bit tho, he’d have to be cool to carry it off!) 2. Caleb 3. Dexter
From your girls list; 1. Esther 2. Eleanor (would definitely end up as Nora) 3. Evelyn

DuchessOfSausage · 13/09/2023 10:59

@Mstxxx , I thought Riva was pronounced Reeva, and hadn't considered some might say it as River or Righ-va. Makes me think of a Lada Riva Smile

Tbf I love the tv show Dexter lol
I did wonder about the big jessie thing and if it was a cool name that would be hard to pull off if you're a nerd lol.

I love Marianne but my daughter who is already here (toddler) has Marian as a middle name so it's probably a no go. Wished I'd have just called her Marianne tbh.

I like Robin for both so might be a thing.

You could name a DD Marianne. Prince George has Louis as a middle name.

Good lists OP - sone of these would make a refreshing change (currently immersed in the early primary years and already bored of hearing the same few names all the time!)

Robin - lovely, and I really don’t get the ‘wet’ thing.
Dexter - bit overly trendy and of the moment for my taste
Nathaniel - a big name and slightly unwieldy but nice and Nate is a nice shortening.
Isaac - nice but possibly a bit overdone
Oliver - no, way too many of them
Elijah - not keen and I’ve come across a few unpleasant ones
Jesse - nice
Caleb - nice and relatively underused

Eloise - too girly for me
Frances - strong and no nonsense but I always find it a bit plain/dowdy

Julia - OK but slightly dull. Bit of a ‘competent middle class mum’ name!
Esther - lovely
Alma - growing on me slightly, but I still slightly think ageing barmaid
Riva - lovely sound but can’t get past the Reeva Steenkamp connection.
Alessia - too girly/frilly
Robyn - nice
Morgan - not keen
Louisa - elegant and underused
Eleanor - classic, timeless etc - great if you can avoid an overdone ‘El-‘ shortening.
Isla - massively overdone; there are 4 across my daughter’s year group
Evelyn -no, the world doesn’t need another Evie
Margot - faddy
Iris - very popular now but I love its simple elegance and the goddess/rainbow/flower connections.

My ‘short shortlist’ would be Robin, Nathaniel, Isaac and Caleb; and Esther, Robyn, Eleanor and Iris.

Top 3 from each -

  1. Jesse -underrated and awesome
  2. Oliver - love this name, just wish it was less popular
  3. Nathaniel - great name, and I love all the nicknames
  1. Alessia - gorgeous, and sounds great in many languages
  2. Julia - timeless
  3. Isla - fresh and beautiful

The rest I didn't feel totally right critiquing as there is nothing wrong with the names, it's just not my style <3

ididntwanttodoit · 13/09/2023 15:45

Boys
Robin
Girls
Eloise
Frances
Julia
