Frank???? Asking as there is already a male Frank in the family.
I see them as different names but would
like it to use Franklin to honour the same relative that Frank is named after

In my experience (which is limited) yes the Franklin I know gets called Frank. Don't know if it would always happen.

TropicalTrama · 12/09/2023 14:00

I think it’s more likely than not just because more people seem to use shortenings than don’t e.g. I’ve easily met three times as many Nick as I have Nicholas or Chris as opposed to Christopher. Etc etc. Even if you never use it at home it’s out of your control once they’re at school. But it wouldn’t be a reason not to use the name for me!

I know of one young Franklin (although they are in the US) and they are always Frankie

Feedthebird36 · 12/09/2023 16:04

Thank you. I did wonder if the names were too similar but to me they are so different. I would have used Frank had it not already been taken but really love Franklin to honour a very dear relative

It’s probably less likely if there is already a Frank in the family. The domain you can’t control is school, especially secondary, but lots of children go by different versions of their name at home and with their friends.

Feedthebird36 · 12/09/2023 16:54

Yes I did agree with this. To me they are very different names though and Frank’s parents have no issue as they agree on them being very different

Will be come a Frank

Greenfinch7 · 13/09/2023 02:23

Frankie is a nice nickname, I think

user1492757084 · 13/09/2023 06:13

Mostly, yes.
You could have a plan for when people start to call him Frank.
Say, "Oh no, his nick name is Kranky or Klink or Franno or Flin or Fracko."

Flin or Franko are quite cute.

SpringIntoChaos · 13/09/2023 07:03

How about Francis instead?

ThelmaBorden · 13/09/2023 07:27

Franklin is a name popular in the USA where shortening is almost obligatory,
first thing came to me was Franklin Mint.

In England the gloomy tragedy of Lord Franklin and Lady Franklin’s Lament

Honouring a relative is admirable but means your son will not have his own name
perhaps Franklin could be a middle name
Franklin sounds as two names, a fine, formal moniker - he would however, always have to behave himself.

ThelmaBorden · 13/09/2023 07:37

Scrolling down after sending, I see Frank/ie Francis Franklin often disputed,
mention of American president and founding father, - did you consult these forthight threads, OP?

Feedthebird36 · 13/09/2023 07:56

@ThelmaBorden no I have not but I shall do now.
We always said we would have Frank as the name so Franklin is as far as I would want to budge.
The parents of Frank were aware of our intention to use the name so do not want to use as middle name as it is too sentimental
