Baby Girl Name Inspiration

Struggling a lot to find a name for our baby girl.

I don't like anything too frilly, I much prefer strong sounding names, one or two syllables I think and nothing too popular, I would rather outside of top 100 or at least 40-50 or above. We also probably won't have middle names.

Names we like but can't quite agree on include
Erin: I love this but partner isn't sure
Luna: worried about popularity and cat/dog issue although I don't know any babies or pets called Luna
Raine: used to be the front runner, now not too sure, is it too negative? Also, only boys name we had was Rafe and we feel using Raine would completely rule out ever being able to use Rafe in the future as too similar?
Callie: more my partners favourite, I have concerns it's too similar to surname and begins with C and for me is too frilly.
Sadie: although it ends in ie I think it still sounds strong but the name is in the family so not really useable.

Any suggestions would be amazing, or thoughts on the names above.

A few have mentioned Fern but I think it’s a great option for your requirements

longer list
Fern
Lark
Anna
Niamh
Rosa
Corin

love Erin too. Don’t like the others on your list really.

Thanks all for your replies so far, really useful to hear others opinions on the names we have so far, we've been keeping them all a secret from F&F so it's very interesting seeing the responses to them.

@OopsieeDaisy I really like Quinn but OH is not keen and there's no swaying him on that one.

@Riverlee Cassie is nice, we'd thought about it before and dismissed it but might give this one some more thought again. I think I've never been sure about names with heavy sounding "s" but I can't really say why that is. I do like it, and it definitely isn't as common anymore but not unusual which I like.

@Wotwotwotwotwot I do like Ingrid, it was on my long list but there's just something stopping me liking it enough.

@SerenityNowInsanityLater I love Blair, but unfortunately it isn't a name we can use.

@GoodVibesHere I think I like Lara, but OH is against it because of Tomb Raider...

@DuchessOfSausage I like Lana, but unfortunately I don't think it works very well with our accent. Connie really doesn't work with our surname unfortunately either. Really interesting though about the combination of vowels and consonants, I'd never thought about it like that before but it does make sense so thank you 😊

@Wale90 I just really can't get passed Stella being a pint of lager, it is nice to see Erin getting a lot of love though, I do think that's my favourite at the moment.

@Elizabeth110100 I like Nora, but my OH says it sounds like norovirus 🙈 ... I'll try and work on him with this one some more as I do think it fits with what we're looking for.

So a couple more to consider 😊 Cassie and Nora, any other suggestions or thoughts would be welcome 🙂

@Havanalily1806 ,I'm not that keen on Lana either, makes me think of wool, and I think all the L names sort of blur into each other.

Norah is a nicer spelling. Fern is a bit too naturey for my taste, although it makes me think of Fern Britton and I like her. She has a strong surname, as has Fearne Cotton (even though her name seems to have a lot of extra vowels). I think the trouble with names like Fern and Pearl for me is I hear them as Furn and Purl.

Corin and Blair are boy's names. Blair is too surnamey, but Corinne is pretty.

I think the tendency is to look for a name for a little baby girl, but the baby will only be a little baby for a short time and an adult for a very long time I hope.

I love Erin, one of my favourites.
Raine is a wonderful name! I imagine a glamorous confident woman in the 1930s.
Callie, it sounds pretty but it seems like I'd want it to be short for something, Caroline?
Luna and Sadie, sorry, both are dog names to me!

I lived the name Luna for a girl until OH told me he didn't want to use it as they'd get called Lunatic and now I can't hear anything else when I hear it

Violetbinlid · 12/09/2023 09:07

Erin, lovely name ❤️

Havanalily1806 · 12/09/2023 18:29

@TaigaSno thank you, I used to be so set on Raine and now I'm so undecided so it's nice to hear some positives.

@FirstTimeMumma2021 yeah it's never really been a name I liked, then the last few weeks we both really liked it, but we've both decided there's too many negatives with it (lunatic, loony, pets name etc) that it's now officially off the table.

@Violetbinlid thank you, it is definitely my favourite, we just can't agree on it.

@DuchessOfSausage you are right about L names blurring into each other, I've definitely felt that more when we've been seriously trying to decide. Love the spelling of Norah with a h, I think that's much nicer, but OH is still very much "norovirus" so that's a no go.

I do like Fearne, there's just something about it that "isn't enough" for me, I don't know how else to describe it. And I definitely agree with you on the baby for a short time but adult for life really... I felt this a lot when we were trying to decide on boys names, some really terrible boys names when you placed them on a teenager or adult...

I love the names Rhiannon and Robyn, although the former perhaps doesn't fit the brief as it is quite long. Wren is also lovely, I actually ruled it out as I didn't think it was frilly enough so perhaps fits the bill?

mathanxiety · 19/09/2023 03:11

I'm not keen on Erin. It's a brand of soup.

Callie is an insipid name imo, a bit insubstantial, and definitely frilly. It blends in with all the Ellies and Ellas and Allies out there.

I like Sadie.
