Can you really look like a name or do you just grow into your name?

Hello, I was just wondering what your thoughts are on this matter. Do you believe that there are certain names that ‘match’ the way you look better than others or is that just a myth and names are just something you grow into? I find it interesting that parents often wait until the baby is born to decide their baby name choice based off how the baby looks, which I find interesting as I think it’s quite difficult to tell what the baby will look like as they grow older and mold into their appearance and quite frankly almost all babies look the same to me. Is it a gut instinct or your intuition that tells you baby doesn’t feel like a Aaron baby feels more like Robert or is it only based on the baby’s appearance? Now, I myself don’t have children but I would love to hear from parents who have waited until birth to name the baby and what made you know which name was the right one.

Oh, how coincidental that you mention this topic! I once had a Greek friend named Ellie, and for the longest time, I thought her name didn't fit her one bit. But over time, I began to see how perfectly it suited her and I bumped into her today. It's an interesting thought that names could "match" someone's appearance, but at the same time, I think it's a bit of a myth. Like you said, it's hard to predict how a baby will look as they grow older, so deciding on a name based on looks seems somewhat futile.

I've always wondered how parents who wait until birth to name their little one come to their decision. I'm sure it's based on a mix of intuition and gut feeling, but I'm curious to know if there's a specific moment or event that just clicks and the name feels undeniably right. Then again, perhaps it's just something you grow into and the name becomes a natural part of your identity. Hmm, the mysteries of baby naming!

It’s an interesting question of nature/nature. I think if you like more eclectic or unique names, then that will probably show in your parenting and how you raise the child to be. Similar with more traditional names. Theres also a cultural element.

I also think about names that create an image in your head, things like Ginger or Willow, who you would expect to be quite lean and willowy! So if I was a short, stocky couple I probably wouldn’t anticipate my child to fit that description and wouldn’t choose it for future offspring

I think it's a total myth, every child grows into their name and you end up not being able to imagine them being called anything else no matter what they're called, I have two dds and I'd never have named them anything if I was waiting to see what they looked like

I think the same as you. Generally speaking, I think people just grow into their names, unless it's a really extreme case, like for example a very frilly, feminine name for somebody that is the opposite. But I do think the baby thing is daft. Babies look very similar, I don't think they really look like any names, I think people just conflate that with a name feeling right to them.

I agree with this.

Interesting thread!

My parents always say that when I was born "You just looked like a [myname]!"
But I think I would have had my name no matter how I looked, it's an old family name and at least my mother was very set on it.

Perhaps if the parents have a few names that they are seriously considering, then they might look at their baby and think "Does he look like an Aaron or a Robert?", but like you say it's probably more about a "feeling" than about appearance.

But I also do think that people grow into their names, for sure! And also, sometimes you know two very different persons with the same name, and it can still suit them both.
