Help me pick the right name

Hello. We are so undecided and need your help choosing our baby girls first name! Can you please share your thoughts on the following names for a girl being born and raised in the US.

  • Aria - too popular? Ranks 23 in the US, but according to “playground analysis” considering all its spellings it ranks 10 most popular name. Does it mean another Aria in each years class?
  • Lilia - is it too similar to many other names like Lila and Leyla, Lillian in a way that it blends in with all similar names? Also is it too confusing on the screen?
  • Ayla - with Isla both names are becoming very trendy?
  • Alara - very rare, has turkish origins, can be mixed up with Elara or Alana…

Aria 100% it's very pretty and they probably won't have another in their class, that normally only happens if the name is Number 1 like Emily in the 00s.

Ayla is lovely.

Really like Aria too. 💖

Sunshineclouds11 · 06/09/2023 19:18

Ayla

lizzaliza · 06/09/2023 19:36

To me Aria always sounds a bit too much like Aryan, but it is very popular so I think most people wouldn't even make that connection.

Ayla is lovely but to me the more 'correct' spelling is Isla.

Alara is a bit too monotone for my liking.

My vote is for Lilia - beautiful name. Yes there are a lot of Lila's and Lyla's and Layla's at the moment but Lilia is still different (and nicer).

Not keen on any of them, but Lara is nice

ChocolateCinderToffee · 06/09/2023 22:22

Oriana?

continentallentil · 06/09/2023 23:01

Lilia is a bit wet and frilly, Aria just makes me think master race or GOT, the other two sound made up.

Adela
Lara
Ida
Lydia

Aria I think will be quite dated, there was a big influx of them several years ago.

Ayla/Isla has been incredibly popular for years now

Not keen on Alara

Lilia is beautiful

I don’t like any of them if I’m being really honest. They’re all very trendy in a sort of boring way and will date badly. None of them will stand out in the crowd of similar sounding baby names - the vowel-y, ‘l’ heavy names of which there are literally swarms in every class. The best of the bunch I supposed is Lilia but I’m not crazy about it. I’m sorry OP not trying to be harsh but just being really honest!

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 09/09/2023 03:33

If you like that sort of sound there are rarer stronger sounding names that you could choose. I like a PP’s suggestion of Oriana. How about Athena, Allegra, Astrid, Ariadne, Marina, Astrid, Louisa, Artemis, Lucia? I think these are feminine and pretty while also being strong.

Flyingalone · 09/09/2023 03:37

Aria is best - straightforward to understand when introducing yourself, easy to spell. Others are tongue twisters and are giving me a bit of a headacheGrin

Ayla will be often asked if spelt Isla?

mathanxiety · 09/09/2023 03:49

They all sort of morph into each other, and they're all a bit wispy and lacking in substance.

Lilia and Aria are the best from the list imo. I only know one of each (I live in the US).

kezzygrey · 09/09/2023 04:08

I like Lilia. The others are nice but I find A names are everywhere, half my childrens' class are A names and a lot quite similar so they all sort of blend together. Lots of Amara, Amaia, Anaya, Alana, Amelia, Amelie, Amari...

KirstenBlest · 09/09/2023 08:49

@kezzygrey , I think you live in the same area as me.
Lots of Amayas and Anayas. The names are pretty but the A-aya doesn't sound great when called out loudly repeatedly.

Yes I agree.

Aria - too nothingy
Lilia - Lily is much nicer. Too many vowels and Ls
Ayla - Isla and Ava are extremely popular in the UK.
Alara - Too vowelly
