Names like Scarlet

Absolutely love the name Scarlet, I’m not sure any name can beat it. Sadly, I’m aware most people would consider the name to be spelt Scarlett (I just like colour/nature names) and prefer it to resemble that. Hence I’m not going with it, as I don’t want it to be an issue.

Like Violet too, but then there’s the discrepancy around if it’s Vi-let or Vi-o-let (2 or 3 syllables) I personally pronounce it with 2 but it seems it should be 3… so may as well forget that name as well.

Love Ivy but it’s outrageously popular.

thank you

I'd go with Ivy. I don't know any so I don't think it's that popular!

UncleBryn · 03/09/2023 08:10

I know two Scarlet's and both spell it with one T. I think it looks nicer spelt like that but that's probably because I am used to it. Go with the name you love or you'll regret it.

Go with Scarlet if that's what you love. So many names have different accepted 'usual' spellings, even if one is more commonly used than the others:-

Molly/Mollie
Lily/Lilly/Lillie
Holly/Holly
Sienna/Siena
Madison/Maddison
Isabelle/Isabel/Isobel
Darcy/Darcey/Darcie

Matthew/Mathew
Mark/Marc
Jackson/Jaxon
Thomas/Tomas
Luca/Luka
Mohammed/Muhammad etc

That's just the tip of the iceberg! There are so many examples.

My DCs have several friends called Scarlet / Scarlett and I always forget how each one spells her name (we also know several Margo / Margots whose spellings get muddled).

I say Vy-oh-let. 3 syllables (only know one of those)

VenusClapTrap · 03/09/2023 17:15

I know a Scarlott. Thought it was weird the first time I saw it, but didn’t give it another thought after that. Scarlet is fine. Other suggestions:

Sapphire
Satine
Ondine
Emerald

Is there any reason you don't want to use the conventional spelling?

FWIW I have a goddaughter Scarlett and I always, always want to spell in Scarlet. The tt just look wrong to me and I have to really check myself when writing her name in cards and messages (and she's 12 so I've had plenty of time to get used to it!)

I know a Scarlet, and prefer it.. I do think it’s had its day though. I’ve only heard Violet as 2 syllables, but it’s also very popular.

Yes, there is a reason which she explained in her OP.

Enko · 04/09/2023 07:30

With Scarlet/t 's. I check for each one.

Similar that I haven't seen mentioned (but may have missed)

Well yes, most people do. But nobody is going to be stunned if someone uses one t.

Thanks Zaaar for stating the obvious 🙄I was lending support to the op re spelling of Scarlett. Most people were stating Scarlett was spelled with one T and I wanted to add my experience re Scarlett being spelled as Scarlett with two Ts.

And yes nobody is going to be stunned re one t or 2. But thanks for critiquing my post 😘 good reminder about what mums net is about.

Op for your reference I named my Bub after Scarlett o’hara in gone with the wind - using the traditional spelling ❤️

Then I apologise. Flowers

It came across as a criticism to me 'most people spell it with two ts' and I felt for the OP wanting to call her baby a name so badly but being told told that people were going to miss-spell it all of the time.

It is what MN is about. People should call their own babies what they want to call them.

PeachF · 04/09/2023 10:09

I have a Scarlett and people always spell it with one T instead of two. So I think misspelling will happen regardless. I love her name though.

I'm confused here. I too love the name Violet (and the colour) but I don't see how it is possible to pronounce it with only 2 syllables.

Me too! I definitely say it with 3.

I think two syllables is
