2 very different girls names - can't choose

I know mumsnet view "Rose" as the ultimate filler name, however it has very significant meaning so is non negotiable.

Narrowed down to:
Rose Juliet
Or
Athena Rose

I love the strength of Athena, and do have links to Greece. Love Theodora but doesn't go with surname. Rose of course has a lot of meaning so must be featured. And I really love Juliet from Gnomeo and Juliet. I like Delilah but worried about the negative meaning and that it would just be shortened.

Which of the two above would you pick and why?

Thank you.

I also think Juliet Rose is the way to go , names do not necessarily get shortened . I have a name that is commonly shortened and mine is rarely shortened .

BuffaloCauliflower · 02/09/2023 16:46

@KirstenBlest what other way is there to say it?!

Athena is beautiful, I like it much more than Juliet. Which is fine, but just less nice than Athena

Surely a middle name is only a 'filler' name if it doesn't have meaning, even if it is rare/unusual? If you've picked a name just for the sake of it, because you feel your child should have one and just happen to like that one, it's a filler name. If you've picked a name that has meaning to you or honours someone close, who cares whether other people think you chose it simply because every other kid has those names as middle names?

Popular middle name choices happen for 2 reasons. They either flow nicely after most names (often the case with 1 syllable names), or they were popular first name choices among the grandparents of the generation currently having children. In the cases of Rose, Grace and May, both are true so of course it seems like every other kid has those names because they do, for those reasons! To claim people using them are probably just making up a link to use it is absurd and damn right rude.

Personally I'd much rather choose a name with meaning than a random middle name for the sake of it.

Athena Rose flows better imo, so I would go for that especially as you know the middle name is special to you. Who cares whether anyone thinks you picked it simply because it's popular? You'll know the truth and that's all that matters.

Rose Juliet. Not keen on Athena at all.

Thank you @HamishTheCamel and @Lifeinlists but I dislike nicknames and Juliet will definitely get shortened to Jules or something.

My sister is a Juliet and is always called Ju, Julie or Jules, even by strangers when she's just introduced herself as Juliet. She hates them all but people seem to automatically shorten the name.

My vote goes to Athena Rose, I think that's beautiful.

Pemba · 02/09/2023 17:10

Like pps, I love Juliet Rose. You say you dislike nicknames, but what's to prevent Rose from becoming Rosie? Or somebody will come up with a shortening for Athena!

Quite like Athena Rose, and it's more unusual of course.

RuthW · 02/09/2023 17:24

Juliet Rose

Or

Rosemary Juliet.

I dislike Rose as a full name.

continentallentil · 02/09/2023 17:38

Athena

Just because while Rose is lovely there SO many Rose/Rosie/Rosas

As a middle name though Rose has got tired so I would fling something else - Athena Juliet Rose or Athena Rose Juliet both work well.

Athena is strong and elegant, although I have to admit Athene pips it for me

LoonyLois · 02/09/2023 17:40

I think Juliet Rose too

continentallentil · 02/09/2023 17:41

… as to the rest
Theodora - would avoid as Theo/dore is so overdone and quite a few Theodora’s too

Juliet - it’s lovely but less strong than Athena. Getting popular too.

Delilah is too twee for me

I like Juliet, but don't like how some make it rhyme with Serviette.

Now I'm intrigued as I've only ever heard it pronounced like Jule-iette.

The emphasis should be on the first syllable 'Ju'. Definitely not the 'ett' sound

Ah ok, the only Juliet I know pronounces it like serviette.

pilates · 02/09/2023 18:39

Rose Juliet

Yes me too. I'm sitting here saying both and can't work out how you pronounce it so it doesn't rhyme 🤔

Lifeinlists · 02/09/2023 14:48

I was just thinking the same. Juliet is a lovely and underused name.

Me too.

I think Juliet Rose is pretty & sounds much nicer that way around

I thin Athena Rose is an odd coupling. To me they fight each other, instead of complimenting.

i like Meghan Rose (if you can get past the markel thing)

Amelia Rose

Amelie Rose (love it!) hmm
is 54 too old for another baby??

daisypond · 02/09/2023 21:12

I like Rose as a first name. I also like Athena and Juliet. I’m a bit baffled why anyone would think Juliet pretentious, as a pp said above. But it would bother me if people pronounce Juliet wrongly. It has the emphasis on the Jul- part, not the -et part.

MeAgainPeeps · 02/09/2023 21:15

I like Athena Rose. I think it's beautiful.

KirstenBlest · 02/09/2023 21:18

@Snazzysausage , If you think of Janet and Janette, you say JAN-et and Jan-ETTE. Julia is JOOL-i-a not Julie-AH

Juliet is JOOL-y-et not Julie-ETTE.

cf. some say Eleanor as Ellen-ORE but most say EL-en-or

2B2G · 02/09/2023 21:33

My daughters name is julianna and nobody has ever shortened it

PinkRoses1245 · 02/09/2023 21:34

consider what the shorten versions of Juliet could be like Jules or Julie, you have to be ok with these. And I’d wait and decide once baby is here safe and well

Poppins2016 · 02/09/2023 21:42

I really like Athena.

If you like Theodora but can't use it, would Thea be an option (almost amalgamating two names that you like)?

cansu · 02/09/2023 22:04

Most names can be shortened. Athena will probably become Affie or Thena. Rose can become Rosie.
Juliet Rose sounds better than Rose Juliet.
Athena Rose is also lovely.

chocolatecheesecake · 02/09/2023 22:16

Rose Juliet.

grass321 · 03/09/2023 07:43

But it would bother me if people pronounce Juliet wrongly. It has the emphasis on the Jul- part, not the -et part.

But there's no right or wrong. The Juliet I know emphasises the et not the Jul. That's not incorrect, it's just her preference.

Samzzz · 03/09/2023 07:59

Athena Rose
