Are these names too similar for sisters?

I have a little girl called Molly and am pregnant with my 2nd daughter.

My partner and I find it hard to agree on baby names but one that we both really love is Marlowe.

Is this too similar to Molly?

please try not to be too harsh in your responses as it has taken us a long time to agree on anything lol.

Nope not too similar at all. They are both nice ☺️

I thought you were going to say Polly...

FayCarew · 30/08/2023 12:45

The sounds are a bit similar but they don't seem the same type of name.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 30/08/2023 12:45

I love them.
You could also do Molly & Harlow.

ToastyCrumpets · 30/08/2023 12:46

Fine unless you’re going to shorten Marlowe to Marlie

Candleabra · 30/08/2023 12:47

I think they are a bit similar, but then maybe I’ve only thought that because you’ve asked the specific question. It’s probably because they start with the same letter.

FayCarew · 30/08/2023 12:47

If you had said that DC2 was going to be a boy called Arlo, I would not have said they were too similar, so they're probably fine.

I was going to suggest Harlow too

Overthebow · 30/08/2023 12:48

It’s not too similar but don’t shorten it to Marley. It is very similar to the town though!

Birdiboo · 30/08/2023 12:51

@FayCarew if we were having a boy he was going to be Arlo! And then we couldn’t agree on a girls name and then thought Marlowe and we both love it.

We wouldn’t shorten her name to Marley, probably Lo/Lola for a wee nickname but mostly she will be Marlowe.

These replies have really helped, thank you all 🥰

I've just read your update on your other post.

I'm not sure what you want people to say tbh. Do you want people to be honest about whether they go or not? (As you also add don't be too harsh).

Our opinions are irrelevant if Marlowe is the name you both truly love and have settled on. Asking people whether it goes with Molly is only likely to put you off, hence me not being sure how to answer really as I'm not too sure what you want to hear! Your comments on the other thread seem to suggest you've definitely chosen this name, rather than are simply considering it. It that case it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks so personally I'd advise you to stop seeking opinions now and just be content with your choice.

littlemousebigcheese · 30/08/2023 12:51

They aren't too similar but also feel quite far apart in taste?

Birdiboo · 30/08/2023 13:03

@BoleynMemories13

You are by no means obligated to respond so if you aren’t sure what to say then maybe don’t say anything

I have added don’t be too harsh as I have seen some awful comments on other peoples threads about their choices of names that I would never make myself. There’s a way to say you aren’t keen on something without being rude or snobby about it but I think sometimes people forget that on these forums.

Asking people not to be harsh is not me saying they can’t have an opinion, it is simply asking that their opinion isn’t phrased in a rude way.

There are obviously some lovely people who give their opinion without being rude, even if they dislike something.

I also happen to have ADHD and hyperfixate on things and can be quite indecisive and one of the things I have been fixated on has been choosing a name.

As far as I am aware there is no limit on how many times I can post my own thread but again please don’t feel the need to respond if you don’t know what to say.

Have a lovely day though!

They're lovely names OP. Molly is my niece's name and Marlowe is just gorgeous and classic so yes I'm a fan! And not too similar at all. Like a PP said it's hardly Molly and Polly 😆

Birdiboo · 30/08/2023 13:10

@Whichwhatnow aww thank you, I have always loved the name Molly - it’s what I called on my dolls when I was little!

I actually love Polly haha but obviously not with Molly.

❤️

Harlow goes better but of Marlowe and Harlow, Marlowe is the better of the two.
Halo or Carly would go a bit better. Molly and Clara sound like sisters.

Birdiboo · 30/08/2023 13:14

@FayCarew they are lovely - we already have a Clara and a Carly in our family though!

commonground · 30/08/2023 13:19

Or you could have the spelling Marlo - or Harlo. (as you liked Arlo for a boy).

I'm with pp that I think Harlo(w) goes better with Molly.

Molly and Lola sound more similar tbh (if you were going with the Lola nickname)

FayCarew · 30/08/2023 13:22

Harlo and Marlo are truly dreadful.

billycat321 · 30/08/2023 13:25

Thought Marlowe was more of a boy's name but these days nothing surprises me.

Whatsthepoint1234 · 30/08/2023 13:26

They don’t sound too similar but please don’t call your daughter Harlow (it’s a shithole) - at least Marlow is a nice town? They do seem very different styles though (classic and feminine) vs (modern and unisex) you’ve probably already thought of this but would you just call her Arlo (or Arla) as it is a unisex name anyway and I’d say as feminine as Marlow (I know boys called Malo after the saint and Marlowe). If you really like Arlo I’d use it!

Peony654 · 30/08/2023 13:29

ToastyCrumpets · 30/08/2023 12:46

Fine unless you’re going to shorten Marlowe to Marlie

This is a good point, do consider shortened versions

caringcarer · 30/08/2023 13:29

They do sound similar particularly if once she's at school her friends shorten her name to Marlie. Bare in mind it's hard to control what shortened version her friends call her.

Devilsmommy · 30/08/2023 13:33

Molly and Marlowe's got a lovely ring to it. Not too similar at all. Beautiful name without being too unique and out there😊

You seem to have misinterpreted my comments completely. I was simply suggesting if you don't want to be put off (which I assumed from no harsh comments) maybe it was best not to ask for feedback? (As I wouldn't want you to be put off by others if you had genuinely decided). I certainly wasn't trying to censor you by saying you can't post the question!

If you're genuinely happy for honest but non-offensive about the name itself responses, I don't think it's the greatest match tbh as it's completely different in style to Molly and also has the issue of being the same initial (which is quite a marmite trend for siblings, people tend to either love or hate shared initials so you're bound to get mixed feedback on that factor).

My personal opinion is that Emma matches much better, in terms of style, but if Marlowe is the name you truly love I can't see a reason why you shouldn't use it.

Whataretheodds · 30/08/2023 13:38

I think they're a bit too samey, yes.

I'm not a fan of shared initials for siblings but a Marianne or Melissa or Maxine would still be less similar-sounding.

But it also depends on your accents.
