Will Robin (f) be bullied?

We are expecting a little girl and have always loved the name Robin (spelt with an I not Y) but have started to have doubts and not sure if it’s the hormones or not!

Would she be submitted to a lifetime of ‘where’s Batman’ and ‘red breast’ jokes?

We both love the name but don’t want to set her up for a lifetime of bullying. Am I over thinking this?!

Yes you are overthinking it. You might get 1 or 2 jokes by 5 year olds but that will happen for any name, not a lifetime of bullying.

I know a little Robin.
I think you are overthinking it tbh.

NeedTheSeaside · 26/08/2023 23:26

My god daughter (well, one of them) is a Robin with beautiful 'red' hair.

shes's 22 now & it has never been a problem.

i LOVE 'in' and really dislike 'yn'. I DGAF if it's supposed to be the 'male' version,
it's just nicer.

Go for it.

I know a girl Robyn and no one says a thing about her name. Do kids now even know Batman has Robin as a side kick?

booksandbrooks · 26/08/2023 23:39

It's a very common name these days (both spellings) don't worry about it.

seven201 · 26/08/2023 23:52

I know a 3 year old girl Robin. Very cute. Personally, if it was my dd I'd go with the Robyn spelling, as I hadn't seen the Robin spelling for a girl before my friend had her dd.

my82my · 26/08/2023 23:58

I work with a girl called Robyn. You're definitely overthinking it's a lovely name.

Throwingpots · 27/08/2023 00:01

This is my daughters name, she’s now an adult and has never been bullied.

CallieQ · 27/08/2023 01:09

I would spell it Robyn for a girl

user1492757084 · 27/08/2023 06:33

Robin is not at all an unusual spelling for a girl.

EinyLinky · 27/08/2023 06:43

No, it will be fine. I really like Robin 😊

Emelene · 27/08/2023 06:44

I have only seen Robyn for a girl so you may have confusion around gender and spelling. Depends if that would put you off!

WholeHog · 27/08/2023 06:45

I think of Robin as a male name and only know male Robins. I would assume the person was male with that spelling.

RedRobyn2021 · 27/08/2023 06:46

I personally love the name, I think it's especially nice with an "i"

continentallentil · 27/08/2023 08:36

No, it’s a lovely name and quite popular.

I prefer the Robin spelling and think of it as unisex.

I think Robyn was an alternative female spelling that appeared in the Uk in the 70s. The older female Robins I know spell it like that, and in the Us it’s usually just Robin (like Robin Wright). Robyn always seems fussy to me.

Growlybear83 · 27/08/2023 08:56

I've always understood that Robin is the male spelling and Robyn is for girls.

donkra · 27/08/2023 08:59

Actresses Robin Tunney and Robin Wright are both over 50. Girls have been named Robin for a long time.

kezziegrey · 27/08/2023 08:59

I know three female Robyns and two male Robins, never heard anyone say anything negative or Batman related about their names.

Yourebeingtooloud · 27/08/2023 09:02

Definitely overthinking. Teasing about names isn’t a thing that happens like it used to - names in general are much more diverse so children are used to far more variety than they used to be.

Robinbuildsbears · 27/08/2023 09:04

I absolutely did get that type of bullying because of my name. It was unusual enough that everyone in the school knew of me, and that carried over between schools. I also had a masculine last name so was frequently mistaken for a boy on registers which didn't help with bullying.

However, that was during the noughties, so there's a pretty good chance that it wouldn't be especially unusual anymore, and possibly that bullying styles are different now. People can be bullied for all sorts of things, so choosing a more common name might not make a difference anyway.

As an adult I think I suit my name and couldn't imagine being called anything else. So if you are set on it then I say go for it.

Fallulah · 27/08/2023 09:05

I’ve taught a lot of Robins (always girls and usually with the y) and never heard any Batman comments.

DCINightingale · 27/08/2023 09:06

Absolutely lovely name. We would have picked it for DD but it didnt go with our surname at all. I think it's a beautiful name for a girl, spelt in not yn

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/08/2023 09:08

It's a diminutive from of Robert. Why not call her Roberta and use Robin as a family nickname? Then she'll have the choice when she grows up.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 27/08/2023 09:11

Robin is lovely. I don’t like the Y, it’s a bit too American, trying too hard.
I did used to work in a school where one of the governors was called ‘Robin Banks’ real name, humourless chap.
but so long as your surname isn’t Banks or Atill (or Hood) then you’ll be fine.
Female Robin in DS3 class - never had any issues.

Surely it can also just be after the bird, like plenty of other nature names...
