Prefer Steven for the nickname Stevie but DP thinks Stephen is more the original

Stephen 100% it's a lovely name one of my favourites

CharliesLand · 24/08/2023 20:02

I love the name Grin I know it's not for everyone but we are definitely going for it and seems Stephen is better, I think I do actually prefer it but just thought if I write Stevie down will people automatically think Steven and btw I just thought Stevie was cute for a baby obviously I'd still say he was Stephen and it wouldn't be an official "known by" type scenario but just a cute shortening for while he was little.

We have a Marcus and David too which I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't have on little boys much these days but we loved them and they are both through the baby stage and they always worked and I quite like I have a little 4 year old "Dave" I think it's great! Grin

The ph spelling is the catholic spelling and the v is the Protestant spelling.

renthead · 24/08/2023 20:16

Stephen

Steve/Stevie is the standard nickname for both spellings of the name.

StillWantingADog · 24/08/2023 20:16

Stephen
not keen on Steve or Stevie tho

Steffan is another option (welsh)

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 24/08/2023 20:17

They are the same name (from the same origins) and when said out loud there's no difference. My brother was a Steven and called Steve by his friends and always Steven by family. I have other friends called Stephen and again, always a Stephen or Steve. The only person I know called Stevie, is a close friend and she is a Stephanie. In London, I have only ever heard Stevie used with a female.

I would go with Steven but only because BIL is Stephen and he's a wanker.

LilyLemonade · 24/08/2023 20:29

Stephen. Love the name - a great classic - and love your other boys' names too. Really strong and timeless.

Stephen with a ph?

Stephen or Steven?
SirVixofVixHall · 24/08/2023 20:35

Stephen. I like the ph . It is a nice name.

TheYadaYada · 24/08/2023 20:39

Steven is the low rent version of Stephen. But both are bloody awful and should stay in the 60s/70s along with Colin and Dennis.

UncleHerbie · 24/08/2023 20:43

Love the name with a preference for Steven.

SuperiorM · 24/08/2023 20:44

Definitely the ph version. It’s a bit like Deborah verses Debra.

FettleOfKish · 24/08/2023 20:45

Stephen is my Father's name and he's a twat of the highest order, so I vote Steven, if you must.

Steven strikes me as the younger / more modern of the two (probably because all the ones my age and younger I know are with a V).

RitzyMcFitzy · 24/08/2023 20:47

I think Stephen feels like more of a classic name in Ireland than it does in the UK. In Ireland we have St. Stephen's Day rather than Boxing Day and it used to be that every boy born on the 26th was called Stephen.

Steven looks more...1980s.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 24/08/2023 20:47

Stephen is a great name - love your others kids' names too, hope they all make a comeback.

Stephen

thatsn0tmyname · 24/08/2023 21:14

An old boyfriend was called Steve. He said if you walked into a pub and called Steve, at least 5 blokes would turn around. Not many little Steves these days.

RuthW · 24/08/2023 21:18

I prefer Steven. Good name

The ph spelling is the catholic spelling and the v is the Protestant spelling.

I know two youngish Steven/Stephens. Funnily enough, Stephen is Catholic and Steven is Protestant.

I have no preference, I like both versions of the name.
