If you asked MN for an opinion on a name and they hated it, did you still use it?

I'm just curious to know if the mostly negative reception dissuaded you or if you still love it and used it?

Basil is a great name.

No, it’s a herb.

scrivette · 24/08/2023 21:13

Mumsnet doesn't like DC1's name, wonders why anyone would use DC2's name as it's a place, however DC3's name sometimes comes up in a 'name you were not brave enough to use' thread.

So in answer, yes I would use a name still, as long as you like it and it's not going to cause the child any difficulties growing up then I am sure it will be fine.

BanditHeelerismyhero · 24/08/2023 21:14

Yes I did. And my parents hated it too.
I don’t care, I still love it and DC absolutely own it

faban · 24/08/2023 21:14

It wasn't mumsnet but a podcast called baby name envy and they had an insta poll and people would vote their fave I loved it. It was 80/20 out of 2 of my fave names and I ended up going for 20% one

AliceMcK · 24/08/2023 21:16

Loads of negative comments about one of my DDs names, I couldn’t care less, I love it, she loves it, that’s all that matters.

I've recently learnt the hard way not to mention my shortlist to anyone! My (usually very lovely) MIL was scathing about one of my preferred names, there's no way I could use it now.

If you're interested, the name was Basil. Lovely, botanical name for a boy, old fashioned but not too much, originally means King. She was scathing about it. Her alternative suggestion was Rex ...! A dog name imo!

So, yeah. I love the baby name threads on here but I'm not putting up my shortlist to be torn apart hehe

I adore basil- my cat is called it 😂 but it was also my husbands grandfathers name! We're not telling anyone (in-laws) our name next time because I know they won't like it 😂

DealForTheKids · 24/08/2023 21:18

NC as they’re fairly unusual but I have a Bryony and a Wilfred. I asked on MN about both.

Both got a fairly marmite reception, people either love Bryony or hate it with the link to ‘Bryan’ (although I don’t see it at all, for me it’s the plant.)

Wilfred gets a similar response, it’s either lovely and literary or ‘wet’. He’s only 18 months but he’s a boisterous little one and not wimpy at all so we shall see!

No regrets on our names though.

Strokethefurrywall · 24/08/2023 21:24

@TwatsAndGuitars you're in for a treat. He gets naked a lot and is fine as fuck!

cornflakesandtea · 24/08/2023 21:35

I did. DD is called Flora. At the time it was slated. As a PP said, I got the "spreads easily" kind of comments. I chose it anyway, I still love it. It suits her down to the ground. I see Flora as a feisty, strong willed, young lady and that's who I've got! However, I find now that when Flora is mentioned on the baby name threads that loads seem to like it now. Not sure what's changed though!

wakeuptooearly · 24/08/2023 22:27

I asked about my youngest and it's frequently mentioned as " good for a little child, but can't imagine on an adult/ doesn't pass the lawyer test" It's in exactly the same vein as my elder two. Some Mumsnetters are going to have a hard time seeing their financial advisor ( first in maths at Oxford), ward pharmacist ( first in Pharmacy UEA) and Dr ( third year medical student) all with flowery/ wet names not fit for an adult.

Busted2006 · 25/08/2023 20:31

I asked and regretted it.

Put me off lots of different names.

As pp have said, no name is going to be universally liked so now I take others opinions with a pinch of salt

KirstenBlest · 25/08/2023 20:51

MN was not around back then. If I asked now, I think they would pass the headteacher/high court judge test, be called classic, dated and boring, and lovely.

Flora is lovely. Poppy gets a bad response on here but I really like it.
I don't like long names, and find the obsession with 'nicknames' strange.

Franxxx · 25/08/2023 20:53

Yes, twice 😊 the first time I gave three options and the one that was hated most was my favourite so I went for it. Everyone loves it and it’s now one of the most popular names where I stay so just shows you what MN knows! The second time it was a bit more mixed but since reading lots of other posts with lovely names getting slated I really didn’t care and just used the name I liked

Thank goodness you mil comment changed your mind lol.

dressedforcomfort · 25/08/2023 22:58

I didn't ask for opinions at the time. But have since read a number of threads that say DS's name (Owen) is bland, dull, ugly, middle-aged etc - which astonishes me as I think it's lovely.

But it's all horses for courses - taste is a very subjective thing. For instance, I will never understand the love for the names Imogen and Hugo on MN. People rave about them on here and i think they're are both dreadful. Ho hum....

Whatsthepoint1234 · 25/08/2023 23:05

@dressedforcomfort I also don’t get the Imogen thing, there seems to be a hatred for names that ‘date’ but Imogen got popular quick and will definitely date! My ds’s names are just ‘popular’ ‘boring’ and one is a NICKNAME!!!!

GeorgeBeckett · 25/08/2023 23:15

Both of my DSs have naughty boy names apparently usually belonging to disruptive children in the classroom. They're only little yet but we'll see I guess!

Angelina1972 · 27/08/2023 17:00

I didn’t ask advice but once looked on a thread about what people thought of the name Laura, it’s our DD’s name. Anyway people commented that they didn’t like it one person said it ‘sounds wet’.

my DD is so feisty and once she puts her mind to something she’s not for budging 😂😂

Flubadubba · 27/08/2023 17:03

MN opinion on DD's name was that it sounded like bathroom cleaner (she is 4).
have seen it mentioned in threads lately where people are a lot more complimentary lately 😂

RomaniIteDomum · 27/08/2023 17:09

DS's name is a "classic" that seems to be a bit marmite. Used it anyway.

DD-to-be my front runner is a Gaelic name that tends to be anglicised and a lot of the comments urging me to do so to make life easier.

Still not a made a firm choice but it a still my front runner and WILL be spelled the proper way.
