Similar names to Linnea?

Hello

We're due with our second girl in a few months, I've been through so many thousands of name lists and I just can't find "the one". My top favourite is Linnea but we have an unusual last name so I'm worried about giving her two names she has to spell and tell people how to pronounce for her entire life. My husband loves Clara but it's not sitting right with me. I've tried all the obvious variations I can think of like Lara, Cara, Lily of etc but again none of them feel right. Any suggestions would be gratefully received! We did tend to lean towards the old classics like Victoria and Charlotte before those two floated to the front if that helps! Many thanks!

Linnea is very similar to Linea towels from Frasers.

Your choice sounds like a school geometry lesson. How about Linnette?

Hiya, it's pronounced Lynn-nay-uh not linear haha!

I love this, I shall mull this one over thank you!

I also thought of the brand Linea 🤣, so it would be a no from me for that reason. Leona is a lovely name and goes very nicely with Phoebe.

Allchangename354 · 25/08/2023 06:35

Loads of names here that are lovely but the same issue as the original name of needing to be spelled out.

As someone with an uncommon first and surname in the UK thank you for thinking about it. You get used to it but it takes time and is boring,

I know any name can need spelling however common, but some almost always will need it. Purely on that criterion
Anna, Helen, Bethany
Some that would be easy but might need similar to with a y/without an eAnne/Ann, Jayne/Jane Helen/Helena Lynn/Lynne,

Aha someone in the very situation! I think we've pretty much decided on not using it as a first name because it would be a burden, would you agree you would have preferred an easier first name? We do already have to spell out our last name all the time. Mind you, I also have to frequently spell out Phoebe which I wasn't expecting! I think we might use it as her middle name as we both do love it but it's less of a burden that way :) it's such a shame as it 'feels' like her name to me, I'm afraid I don't really like the other 'lin' alternatives.

Lilia …. Or lilli-Anne

ShoesoftheWorld · 25/08/2023 06:55

I know what you've said about probably not using Linnea, but to offer a different view, I do think that the variety of names is much bigger these days than in previous generations, and people are increasingly used to varieties of spelling (Amelia/Amelie/Millie/Milly etc etc) and pronunciation (Esmee vs Esmay), so that most people, when told 'Linnea, pronounced Linn-Ay-a', will get it without too much trouble. I wouldn't not use it is that's your only issue. It's a lovely name (and very international - speakers of most languages will default to the Linn-Ay-a pronunciation) and goes really well with Phoebe.

You'd also be surprised at people's ability to mess up what seem to be the most standard, un-mess-up-able names.

Fraaahnces · 25/08/2023 06:58

I know a few Linneas. They’re mostly Scandinavian. How about Greta, Sophia, Mia, Freja or Anna?

Yes some of my friends were telling me what the kids of their kids classmates were called and it does seem a very open generation which is lovely, it's something I feel like we could use more of. I'm just afraid of taking away opportunities for her. My married last name is a foreign name but I kept my English name for work (purely because I was too lazy to rebrand), and when clients found out I had a foreign name they openly said they wouldn't have employed me if they had just seen that before meeting me. Now I think we can all agree that people like that aren't worth our time but I do worry about making life hard for her :/ I hope things are different here by the time jobs become an issue!

They'll have to be (different) - there simply won't be enough working-age people for anyone to indulge silly prejudices (what do you do, btw? That open xenophobia from your clients is pretty shocking).

I worked in trade so I feel like the clientele pool was ripe for it (little old ladies who didn't want a man in the house) but it really opened my eyes to how biased people are when they seemed perfectly lovely to start with, it's stuck with me. I imagine other industries aren't quite as bad (hopefully!)

I love Sophia too but I feel like it has the same problem in that it can be pronounced two different ways, I've known both and they said people hardly ever get it right. I did think about Sophie for a long time but again didn't feel like "the one."

Id prefer an easier name, but not so much I’d deed poll or use another name. I know any name can be spelt wrongly it’s just the chances lower or in some cases the letter count. Though I love it Annalise gives more options for mistake than Anna.

However I’ve been on these threads before and lots of people love their names that may have the same spelling issues. For friends they will get to know it. I also grew up non digital and spelling over the phone. Maybe younger MNetters find easier as they are putting the name in online.

Ease for that accents not used if they aren’t in the main languages of the country and perhaps no hyphens,

TheIsleOfTheLost · 25/08/2023 08:36

Alina
Can be shortened to Ali or Lina

I would have pronounced your chosen name as Lin ee ar from reading it. Easy to see now that has been corrected and I will know for future.

We went for straight forward first names as have a hard to pronounce surname. People still spell them wrong!

Samzzz · 25/08/2023 08:42

Leonie?
Leia (lay-uh)?

Fraaahnces · 25/08/2023 08:47

@Whippetmama - I compromised on Sophie also. I love it, but there are herds of them my DD2’s age, and it also doesn’t quite fit.
I also thought if your husband likes Clara, how about Claire or Céleste? They all mean “light”?

Enko · 25/08/2023 09:23

I'm going to disagree with the poster who says spelling their name gets boring. I'm 53 and I have a name noone can spell and its a unisex name and many want to spell it with a y not a ie. I've never once minded spelling my name. My dd age 21 has a name that needs spelling. She says she never minded it either. Her younger sister. Has Irish name doesn't mind the spelling but says the many ways people pronounce her name gets a bit dull.

Before the other poster says it's different when it's both sur and first name my birth name was Scandinavian I had to spell it all the time. My married name is traditional Scottish and fairly straight forward not unusual but not a Mc/Mac name. I have to spell it All the time. I dont mind.

My oldest is called Phoebe she often has to spell her name too. I think yours will need to do so too.

If you love Linnea then use it. Children get used to spelling their name. Loving the name you give your child is important.

DuchessOfSausage · 25/08/2023 11:58

@Enko , I don't mind with my surname although it's quite amazing how people still get it wrong. It's the way people are often rude or who tell me that I am wrong that offends me.
The child loving their own name is more important than the parent loving it.

You are going to get people who loves being one of 10 Olivias and people who loves being the only FloriannaCinderella and someone who likes being called Zoway. You just can't know.

My children all 4 like their names. It's not something I could have predicted when they were tiny babies we were naming So we picked names we loved and found beautiful. That is all we can do as parents. We can overthink it and we can go through a zillion names. We won't know until they are adults /teenagers if they truly like their name.

MissSingerbrains · 26/08/2023 13:50

Leona (I like Leonie too but people would misspell it)
Laura
Nina
Tessa

as someone who always has to spell their name, I gave my children names which are straightforward to spell

I love Laura but it doesn't feel like the one, I feel like the most awkward person ever! I'm afraid I don't really like the Linnets or Leonie's either, and the news has killed off any desire for anything to do with Lucy's x
