Lynn

What is the original spelling of Lynn? Is it Lynn? Lynne? Lyn? Confused I know they're all acceptable but I like to use the "original" spellings of names. This isn't for a first name and it's more for an ending to the first name. Not looking for opinions on anything other than spelling!

Interesting question!

I have heard Lynn and Lynne, but never Lyn. I don't know which one is the original spelling. Hopefully you will get the answer from someone else.

cherryassam · 19/08/2023 22:46

The stand-alone name I believe was originally Lynn from the Welsh word for lake.

If it’s part of another name though, such as Evelyn, then the ‘original’ spelling of the syllable might be different

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 19/08/2023 22:48

I think lynne looks the most normal when it's just that but Lyn seems to work better if it's on the end of something else.

tilliebilly · 19/08/2023 22:54

Yeah, Lyn is usually there for well established names like Evelyn but we are wanting to name our daughter Amberlyn/Amberlynn. Really not looking for any hats on the name as I'm aware it's not a style MN would probably like. I consider it 2 names together so would like the names spelt correctly individually.

I don't know if this has an answer! They've probably all evolved slightly differently.

FWIW my favourite is Lin.

Hate not hats

I think in this case the -lyn ending looks more correct.

No lol

Amberlyn/Amberlynn

It's the name Amber and Lynn together. Not Anne Boleyn. I know not everyone will like it and that's fine, just need to work out the spelling :)

I think -lyn looks better as a suffix in this context - thinking of Evelyn / Marilyn for example

ImGoingThroughChanges · 19/08/2023 23:13

The stress of Amberlyn and Amberlynn looks like it’s on the AM. If you want Amber Lynn I’d put a gap or a hyphen.

Whataretheodds · 19/08/2023 23:13

In the context you've described Amberlyn would look better than Amberlynn or Amberlynne IMHO

user1492757084 · 20/08/2023 07:25

Amberlynn or Amberlyn - both remind me of ambling along the street. Your daughter could be extra chilled out.

I really like Anne Boleyn Surname.

For Amberlynn/lyn I prefer double n and I think that is the original

KirstenBlest · 20/08/2023 09:48

@cherryassam , that's probably made up. Lynn was originally a boy's name.

continentallentil · 20/08/2023 11:49

I think if you take it to come from lake, the original Welsh spelling is Llyn

But anyway if you are giving your daughter what is a modern invented name, I would just spell it how you want - because it won’t sound like a ‘traditional’ properly spelt name whatever you do. This isn’t a criticism, it just won’t.

I think Lyn is as good as anything - and it’s familiar from Evelyn, Jocelyn, Carolyn. The extra n is a bit of unnecessary frill.

KirstenBlest · 20/08/2023 11:53

@continentallentil , lake is llyn, but you get place names like Glaslyn. Llyn is a masculine word.
I know the odd Lyn who is Eluned or Lynette on the BC, and a Lin who is really Linda

HyggeTyggeDotCom · 20/08/2023 21:20

All I hear is Ann Boleyn, and I reckon you’ll get that a lot. But if it doesn’t bother you they amberlyn looks best in my opinion.
