Is this trend from Margot Robbie? They're bloody everywhere.

The trouble is - you pick a name that you like and you think isn’t very common and then 10 years later it suddenly booms in popularity and you’re uncommon name is very commonplace

when I was born my name was considered a ‘funny foreign name’ but in the last twenty years it’s regularly been top 10

I met a baby Margaux lately 😬

I think once you’re in Oonique naming territory, you know there’s over-saturation of the name.

Oonique 😂

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 19/08/2023 20:30

I think the French spelling was Margot, as in La Reine Margot.

Margaux Hemingway, actress and and model was changed her name from Margot to Margaux after the wine and the spelling then took off.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 19/08/2023 20:31

I like the name, my best friend in school was a Margot. She was lovely.

It makes me think about The Good Life but maybe that's my age showing!

Same! I hear Margot I think Leadbetter not Robbie. 🤣

OddBoots · 19/08/2023 20:34

Are we expecting baby Barbies too? Or will it be Barbara?

Awful name imo

I don't think this is a new spelling. I went to secondary school with a girl called Margaux 20 years ago.

To be fair, I'm so surprised Barbie isn't used.

Everything else 'out there' is , and I actually think BAR-BEE doesn't sound too bad

It always reminds me of this anecdote from the 1930s...
The actress Jean Harlow was once introduced to Margot Asquith at a party.
Jean pronounced it "Mar-gott."
The Countess replied, "The 't' is silent, as in 'Harlow.'"

marshmallowfinder · 19/08/2023 20:44

No apostrophe in plurals. (It's Margots.) I can't stand the name. Looks like Maggot.

user2468101214 · 19/08/2023 20:46

Sorry Linda Stalker but with that language... I think it's time your children went to bed.

My english teacher when i was at high school in the 90’s was a margot. Always thought it a lovely name.

KirstenBlest · 19/08/2023 21:02

Margo in The Good Life wasn't Margot
The Margaux spelling is horrible.

RitzyMcFitzy · 19/08/2023 21:09

I hate the Margaux spelling as it reminds me of Margaux Hemingway and her sad life. Her parents changing the spelling to Margaux after the wine, and just knowing that alcoholism flowed through her family and was the end of Margaux herself - it just feels a bit sad.

I guess I just hate 'trendy' names

How is it 'trendy' ?
As the first reply says, 'Margot' was very well known from 'The Good Life' all those decades years ago. It is quite an old name, and it is pretty normal for "old lady names" to circle back round.

Trendy just means currently fashionable. Margot was out of fashion for a long time and now it's suddenly catapulted back into popularity. Perfect demonstration of a trendy name imo.

NameChange30 · 19/08/2023 20:23

Margot and Margaux are both French spellings. The name was always spelt Margot, originally, until people starting spelling it Margaux after the wine (Chateau Margaux). Personally I think it's a bit weird to name your daughter after wine, but I guess there are worse trends!

I think that’s why Margaux Hemingway was so named.. I’m guessing it’s a bit naff in France also

I think it’s just part of a trend moving past Victoriana into 20s and 30s names like Jean and Lois and Sidney all of which I’ve noticed popping up more.

NameChange30 · 19/08/2023 21:21

But as everyone has said, she was named Margot then changed the spelling to Margaux after the wine then changed it back to Margot later in life, apparently.

Ttpetals · 19/08/2023 21:32

We have a 2 year old dog named Margo 🤣🐕

HappiDaze · 19/08/2023 21:37

It's a cute name

I think it's part of the fashion for old-fashioned names? Lots of little girls called things like Martha or Florence. Margot/Margaret feels like the same era. I've got to admit my first association is Joey Bettany's triplets!

I disagree with a PP that it sounds less nice with a Germanic pronunciation. IMO 'mar-go' sounds a bit like a budget supermarket. Margot with a t is more elegant.

Yes, my first thought was also of the Chalet School triplets, especially as I’ve met a Margot, a Constance, and a Helena over the past few years at baby groups/ toddler groups/ school 😀

Me too. It's cringe as fuck.

I've never come across the other two! Constance was my favourite cousin's name in religion (she was a nun; she was Sister Constance) and Helen (without the a) is my mother's name. Both beautiful names IMO. I guess it just depends what floats your boat.

At least Margot has a pretty meaning.
