Which do you prefer

I personally like Oliver but I feel its so common. I know at least 3 olivers but havent met any ezras but my concern then with ezra is that it's too odd and maybe he'd hate it
Both are family names so no other options please

Ezra all the way. Both my boys know multiple Oliver’s, I only know one Ezra! I don’t think it’s weird at all, it’s a long established name and it’s become increasingly popular the last few years. It makes me think of Ezra Pound!

Louoby · 18/08/2023 13:10

Ezra 100%. Oliver is so overused.

Bobbybobbins · 18/08/2023 13:10

Ooh love Ezra and much less common

Whatsthepoint1234 · 18/08/2023 13:11

But just to reassure you OP most people wouldn’t have that association im just a history nerd! They’d think of George Ezra.

TulipsTwoLips · 18/08/2023 13:12

Oliver

XStardustX · 18/08/2023 13:15

By the way.. if its any help his last name begins with McC..
I'm glad some of like ezra.
I really liked it but some family on my side raised their eyebrows when they heard it which really put me off it. It's my husbands great grandads name

Oliver. Not keen on Ezra, it seems a bit trendy.

Beautifulsunflowers · 18/08/2023 13:23

Oliver
Ezra is gaining popularity and you will find just as many Ezras as Oliver’s in the school playground.
Oliver is a great solid name. Olly for a cool teenager.
Ezra can be shortened to Ez - just not a nice sound in my opinion!
However it’s just my opinion. I’m a random person so you have to go with what you like.

Olika · 18/08/2023 13:24

Love Ezra

tiredexhaustedcantmove · 18/08/2023 13:26

Oliver.
I know a female Ezra and just find it try hard.

FatButtPiglet · 18/08/2023 13:34

Both nice, Oliver more classic so I go for that!

Bournetilly · 18/08/2023 13:35

Ezra definitely. I don’t like Oliver.

sheworemellowyellow · 18/08/2023 13:40

Ezra is an extremely Jewish name, and Oliver not at all. So if you’re of the faith I’d go with the former, if not the latter.

Anothernamethesamegame · 18/08/2023 13:42

My 9 yr old Nephew is Ezra. We’ve met a couple of others but not many, however they have all been younger so maybe it’s getting more popular. No one has ever called him a shortened version. When he was first born they had a few “oh that’s unusual” comments but mainly positive comments and no one ever mentions it now.

personally I like it as a name because it is fairly rare (in comparison to other names)but also historical and not completely made up.

EsmerayUnutamaBeni · 18/08/2023 13:43

Oliver.
Ezra was a Hebrew prophet. Fine if Jewish.

EnglandIsPoorNow · 18/08/2023 13:47

A comment found on the Reddit re the name Ezra:

As a Jewish person, I consider this a very Jewish name. It was the name of the Hebrew day school I attended, and the only people I’ve personally met with this name have been Jewish, and extremely devout/observant. I also associate it with sects of Christianity that tend to draw from the Hebrew Bible for name choices, such as evangelical or Amish people.

That being said, it’s definitely increasingly popular among different groups, including secular and non religious people. I don’t have a problem with anybody using it, I’m just sharing how I’ve always associated the name.

Amdone123 · 18/08/2023 13:54

I love Oliver.
I like Ezra - it's nice that you have that family connection.
We have a relative, Esra ( female) ; mum is Turkish.

FunnysInLaJardin · 18/08/2023 13:57

Ezra.

I've only ever met one in 17 years of parenting. Lovely name

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 18/08/2023 13:59

Ezra may once have been considered exclusively Jewish but so was Noah, and indeed even Joshua at one time. OT boys’ names are having a moment and very few of the parents using them are Jewish, or even particularly religious. It’s eminently usable, especially with OP’s family connection.

Berlinlover · 18/08/2023 14:01

Neither.

RitzyMcFitzy · 18/08/2023 14:02

Ezra is the new Noah. Honestly, you might think it's a bit offbeat but it's really not. It's becoming so popular.

supplelegmassage · 18/08/2023 14:03

Ezra is nice with the grandad connection. I think because it sounds so beautiful it runs to risk of becoming trendy.

supplelegmassage · 18/08/2023 14:04

...* which would be my concern.

faban · 18/08/2023 14:07

Love Ezra. Oliver is done to deaths

Whatsthepoint1234 · 18/08/2023 15:12

It’s interesting regarding pps comments about Ezra being a ‘Jewish name’. I’m Jewish and the Ezra I know isn’t. Most of the Jewish boys I know including my dc have more ‘boring names’ like David, Noah, Tom, Daniel etc. I think most Jews I know would avoid the name Ezra due to fascist connotations.
