Call my son Jack (after my very dear GFather - lost my own father so GFather was like my dad) when my SIL and Brother named their sone Jackson.

Children will have different surnames and only see each other at family events, attend different schools etc. SIL and Bro did know I always intended to name a son Jack if I went on to have a son however aware that no one owns a name and they was well in their rights to also use the name they love also after said relative

I am now doubting if I can use the name but only because of people’s opinions. The name is very sentimental and I would ultimately be upset if I had to settle for another name

Yes! Jack is a lovely name and it has such meaning for you. I think it’s fine for the cousins to have similar names, especially if different surnames, to honour someone special in your family.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 14/08/2023 20:18

Do they refer to their child as Jack or always Jackson. If the second then think it’s fine but if it’s the first it could be quite confusing for the family to know which child is being referred to.

mathanxiety · 14/08/2023 20:25

Yes - perfectly fine imo.

Nevermay · 14/08/2023 20:27

what was your Gfather's actual name? Unlikely to have been Jack, more likely to have been John, surely?

Could you call your baby John, nick named Jack?

JenniferBarkley · 14/08/2023 20:34

Personally I wouldn't although I know that's not the consensus on here. What about another version of the same name like John?

DuchessOfSausage · 14/08/2023 20:34

Yes, but if your grandfather was John, it seems much fresher.

GoodChat · 14/08/2023 20:41

I wouldn't call him Jack if your nephew is Jackson

JumbledE · 14/08/2023 20:55

Yes it’s fine. My brother and my cousin have a very similar first name (exactly the same shortened) and the same last name and it was very very rarely an issue, and not at all now they are both grown up.

You could always give him a middle name starting with J (Jack James/Jacob/Josiah) so the wider family could refer to him as JJ but I don’t think it’s needed.

Use the name you love

Daisybuttercup12345 · 15/08/2023 00:57

Yes absolutely fine.

OopsieeDaisy · 16/08/2023 09:21

I don’t see any issue with this at all!

whoami24601 · 16/08/2023 09:57

I always tell this story on here but me and my cousin have the same first name. We lived next door to each other and went to the same schools. And it was absolutely fine! I'm littlewho and she's bigwho when talking to family that's all. And to top it off there was another girl that lived next door to them with the same first name 🤦‍♀️ they weren't very imaginative on our street 🤣

wingsofabird · 16/08/2023 14:44

Use the name you love
it's fine
