We think we’ve finally settled on William Arve for baby boy 2. But would WAR as initial rule it out for you?

Initial are used a fair amount IRL @DappledThings . It's definitely worth considering.

Used sometimes, but does anyone really care if they spell out a word? I can't imagine seeing a child's initials W.A.R. and it being anything other than briefly registering it's a word then thinking nothing more of it.

IMO it will help your son if you don't give any word-spelling initials at all. And even if in the "wrong" order, any really awkward word anagram is best avoided. WAR is also an anagram of RAW. It probably doesn't matter given the words are just 'war' and 'raw' but I wouldn't.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 15/08/2023 10:05

I'm on the fence on whether WAR is not ok, I'm leaning towards it being fine, it's not rude. Kids might even think it's cool 🤷‍♂️

I think it probably depends on your profession if your initials are an every day thing or not.

I've never used mine, but at secondary school all the tutor teachers initials formed part of the name of the class all the way through. Our teacher's were an acronym for something not rude, but 11yr olds giggled at it a bit.

KirstenBlest · 15/08/2023 10:08

We called some of the teachers by initials, and some of the kids.
Something like BOJ would stick.

WantingToEducate · 15/08/2023 22:58

It wouldn’t bother me at all!

My son’s initials are LBW (cricket fans will know) and we always get jokey comments as my husband is an avid cricket fan and player so they think we did it on purpose. It really was completely unintentional though.

If you are set in the names OP don’t let his initials put you off.

William Arve sounds perfect.
He will be W.R. mostly and sometimes Rsurname W.A.

Where??

StampOnTheGround · 16/08/2023 07:25

I wouldn't worry about initials, my DS's are MAD. I thought about it for a little while, but how often they're spoken about and used it seemed a dumb reason to not choose those names. 😊

KirstenBlest · 16/08/2023 12:30

e-mail addresses, initialising documents or cheques, school clothes, monogrammed belongings, at work (I'm usually KB2 as I have no middle name and there's usually another KB).

In the press or online, you'll see people referred to by their initials or a shortened form of their name - JR-M, MBS, K111C, JLo, LiLo, BoJo etc

Growlybear83 · 16/08/2023 13:09

I have initials which spell a word and was teased as a child. When I got married, my initials still spelled a word, nothing rude but I've always hated it. Because of that I never ever use my middle name or initial and no-one apart from official organisations like HMRC or the NHS even know I have one. I don't see the point of having middle names and didn't give one to my daughter.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/08/2023 13:17

You are overthinking it a bit...

But DH is D.R.Surname. He has been mistaken both for a medical doctor and asked what he's doctorate is in. So people can make wierd inferences from initials.

WotNoUserName · 16/08/2023 13:27

My kids had a teacher with the initials WAR. So his email address was WAR at x school, which always used to make me smile.

HalfBloodPrincess · 16/08/2023 18:24

My youngest daughter’s initials are EVL. It didn’t click for quite a while. Hoping she has a Goth stage as a teen 😁

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/08/2023 18:26

His middle name will almost never be used so his initials will really be WR

Wouldn't worry about it.

Houselamp · 16/08/2023 18:41

It's totally fine, its not a rude word its fine.
My initials spell RAT and I have gone my entire life with nobody, including me, giving a shit. RAT was even in my college and work email addresses and still nobody cared. It does not matter, maybe I wouldn't monogramme anything with my middle initial included but that has never come up anyway.
I have had one conversation about initials with someone, they were an EGG and their friend had just realised (in her mid 50s) that her married initials spelt ARSE and we just said how its funny that it never comes up.
WAR is fine as a set of initials

KirstenBlest · 16/08/2023 19:14

WAR@school Grin. We had the teachers initials on the timetables IIRC

Meadowfly · 16/08/2023 19:25

I wouldn’t. War is a pretty negative word. Initials are used irl - lots of workplaces use initials in minutes, email addresses etc.

RoseRows · 16/08/2023 22:04

I wouldn’t like to have those initials personally

arlequin · 16/08/2023 22:09

I wouldn't personally
