From a Reddit post, not my own.

"While on holidays, I passed by an exposition of portrait from a holiday kids club and couldn't help to write their cute names. It was a club from 4 to 7 and 8 to 12 years old."

Sure but a vomit emoji, really? Also I strongly suspect the poster has no idea how they are pronounced. Loup-Maël for instance is a beautiful soft sounding name, it sounds nothing like 'Loop-Male'.

Yeah , a vomit emoji is a pretty clear indication.

This board is terrible for a certain parochial attitude. Polish names are the worst. You could start a thread asking for thoughts on Patryk or Kacper and wait literal minutes before someone would post sneering at the ‘youneeq’ spellings. There was a thread earlier this year where one poster accused another of making up a class list because it contained two Zuzannas.

I could have done with this list for inspiration when trying to name my two (franco-british household). Interestingly, neither of my DCs name are on the list.

Some of them I've never heard of, such as "Galatée" and "Titouan", the others are pretty normal. And yes I would expect Kaëlye to be pronounced Kah-el-ie rather than Kylie. I also love Maëlys.

watyawant · 15/08/2023 13:04

Isn't Loup pronounced more like a short Lou ?

Yeah it's pronounced Kah el ei, which is how you pronounce Kylie in French 😅.
I had a Titouan this year, I struggled to get the final ''an'' right to begin with (kept pronouncing it like the English "an").

LaChatte · 15/08/2023 18:03

Kah el ie even

Loup = Lou

Are Loup-Maël, Ivanho and Duc-wang, to quote but a few, really on an official list?

midsomermurderess · 15/08/2023 19:41

I love Loïc but doubt it would work here.

I'm sorry but the majority of those are hideous.

Loup-Maël
Garance
Duc-wang

🤢

Garance is a flower name, it's the name of the heroine in Les Enfants du Paradis. The English name is Madder, which is rather unfortunate.

There hasn’t been an official list since 1993. Duc-Wang is almost certainly Vietnamese so wouldn’t have been on that list. Ivanhoé comes from Scott’s novel of 1819 and therefore has the same etymology as Cedric. Loup is unusual but Maël is Breton and a saint’s name.

Daphnis156 · 15/08/2023 20:37

I used to think that young people's names in France were much less silly than some of the awful names current in England.

Roseau18 · 15/08/2023 21:46

We thought about calling pur French/British daughter Garance but decided against it because it is pretty in French but sounds terrible pronounced in English.
