Do you think these names are ok for a baby born 2024 (very short list)

Tom, Richard with Richie as a potential nickname, Emma. I can't think of another girl name I like more than Emma, I like Anna but Emma just a bit more.

I am however worried that if it's a girl Emma is too predictable and common place, I wouldn't want her to think "why did my mum name me this". I also like Laura but all the Laura's I know are my age so I'm thinking it's a bit of a mumsy name for a girl born today.

Yes

HughWalpole · 11/08/2023 20:32

Lovely classic names.

Maireas · 11/08/2023 20:33

They're all nice names. Not trendy, not silly. Laura or Emma would be fine.

LipSurface · 11/08/2023 20:34

I think Laura is lovely but somewhat agree about the mumsy factor.

Emma and Anna both safe, acceptable names that are unbound to any class or era. Though admittedly Anna feels a bit more upmarket, to me anyway, don't know why.

Tom is nice.

Richard is cool. But might be better as a middle name for a baby born 2024.

Petrarkanian · 11/08/2023 20:36

Emma is beautiful, I have an Emma.

Taxiparent · 11/08/2023 20:37

I have an Emma, 17yrs old, I don’t think it dates.

I love classic names, I have seen to many CVs and it’s horrible to say but we judge people on their names as a society. Apple Jim bob or primrose precious is less like my to be taken seriously at a work place.

I love emma!

HolyMoleyGuacamole · 11/08/2023 20:39

Richard? No, it's horrendous.

UltramarineViolet · 11/08/2023 20:40

All the names you mention are timeless classics so absolutely fine for a 2024 baby

I don't think of Laura as being 'mumsy'

WunWun · 11/08/2023 20:42

I think Laura and Emma are both hideously mumsy and dated. I like Anna though.

I was very surprised to hear a newborn baby Richard be called at the hospital recently 😁 It's obviously making a comeback

Even better if your surname is Harrison to call your child Tom Dick Harry-son

CissOff · 11/08/2023 20:46

You can’t go wrong with Kate or Sophie for a girl, in my opinion.

Boys would be James or Daniel for timeless names. Really not a fan of Richie but grew up in the era of Bottom so that has influenced my thinking, I’m sure!

Maryandherlamb · 11/08/2023 20:54

There is a Laura at our little one's nursery and it actually sounds really sweet, quite suits her. Doesn't sound mumsy at all when heard in context!

DuchessOfSausage · 11/08/2023 21:17

Lovely names. So much classier than the trendy ones.

What do you mean by "mumsy"? It literally makes no sense.
So many different women are mothers, millions of different names must be mumsy.
Do you know of a name that isn't?

WunWun · 11/08/2023 22:19

I suppose I mean that those names conjour images of a boring, vanilla homemaker in my eyes. The kind of person who makes motherhood their entire existence aside from possibly meeting a few other mums for tea and sewing. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with any of that, it's just boring.

Maireas · 11/08/2023 22:26

Well, motherhood is rarely boring and certainly not futile. I don't think that the term Mum should be turned into a negative adjective. A word women would try to avoid.
It's as if all the fun, intelligent, creative women aren't Mums. It just makes no sense.

DuchessOfSausage · 11/08/2023 22:26

@Maireas , I think they sound like names other kids' mothers will have.
Like the DC will go to school and the other kids will say I've got an Auntie Emma or My Dad's called Tom.

DuchessOfSausage · 11/08/2023 22:29

Dadsy isn't a word.

iliketherainyouknow · 11/08/2023 22:30

Basically, OP is thinking that as time passes and the kids with that name grow up, people might think of it as more of a "mum name" rather than something like Ava, Olivia, Ella, Luna, Lola, and the like that are more popular with peers. Laura, Emma, Tom, and Anna are all somewhat average names. Using them wouldn't cause anyone to take notice. They're as classic and timeless as they are boring and ubiquitous.

Maireas · 11/08/2023 22:30

I just don't get the logic, @DuchessOfSausage . Madonna is a Mum, Serena Williams, Michelle Obama, .... I know Mums called Tracy, Tiffany, Victoria, Kate, Hannah, Ros, Anjula, Cara....
Most women become mothers. It's so strange to consider that negative, but anyway, we'll just need to disagree on that, it's derailing the thread.

Maireas · 11/08/2023 22:35

I was referring to @WunWun 's post.
Not really the OP.

They are neither boring nor ubiquitous! I could not disagree with you more!

All names become 'mum names' at some point - that's just stupid!

I love your choice of names @soup2poop - not that keen on Richard, but that's just a matter of personal touch. It's so good to see a mum to be choosing beautiful classic names instead of the silly madey-up ones!

A lot of the names currently popular will seriously date their owner!!!! I'm the owner of a name not used much since the 60s!

Maireas · 11/08/2023 22:44

@Lookingatthesunset I agree. It is stupid. I know a mum called Storm!
