Hello everyone, I'm Czech while my husband is Korean. We're living in an english speaking country and expecting a baby. To say that we're completely stuck on baby names is an understandment, lol. At first we wanted a name that works in all three languages but it's harder than it seems. For girls we agree on Luna, Nora & Ella, for boys Hugo & Theo. However none of these names feel perfect. If we don't find "the" name then I guess we'll just do Czech/English first name with a Korean middle. Would appreciate opinions on our names list as well as some suggestions. 🩷

Anna and Thomas

Luna - don't like
Nora -not keen
Ella - too popular
Hugo - like but it's too trendy
Theo - overused, not good if you can't say Th

Thank you! Theo can actually translate to Korean as 테오, pronounced as Tayo. Different pronounciation but I've heard of Korean parents using it anyway.

Do variants on biblical names work in both countries? We had the same problem so we choose a biblical name which is the same in both languages. And for some of these names, if they're not the same, you can just use whichever variant suits the language your speaking.

E.g. Timofei in Russian and Timothy in English. Or Chiara in Italian and Claire in English.

(works for many non Biblical names too, like Claire..)

Andante57 · 08/08/2023 19:33

What about Hannah or 하나 (Hana)? That works in Europe and Korea (and it means no.1 in Korean)

Jazzybean · 08/08/2023 19:37

I actually quite like Tayo?

babyy24 · 08/08/2023 19:52

@Treschic7 biblical names are traditional in Czech Republic, not so much in South Korea but they are used anyway. I quite like Esther, Miriam or Abel. Thanks, will look into them more!

@Andante57 Hana is very cute, thank you. 🤗

@Jazzybean I actually do too! It's pronounced that way in Czech too, but the spelling Tayo seems pretty off in the language. I kinda wish Theo was pronounced as Tayo worldwide. 😆

All the girl names are nice, though my favorite is Luna! I like Theo and while it may be pronounced (tay-oh) in some places, I like that even more so that gets my vote haha

I know a Teo pronounced Tayo, I think his may be short for Mateo, maybe that would work?

Girls, I don't know enough about those languages to know what to suggest. Clara, Nonie, Leona, Viola?

BrokenMantra · 08/08/2023 23:08

I was also going to suggest Mateo . Teo is much nicer than Theo IMO.

I like Luna from your girl's list. Does Anna work? Often quite a good international name.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 08/08/2023 23:41

As an enthusiastic linguist I’ve had a think about what I think might work!

How about :
Sara
Marie
Ana / Anna
Adela
clara
Serena
Carina
Rosalie / Rosa

Adam
Marco
Mika
noah
Peter

could you expand thinking about Nicknames so a name of one language with nicknames that work in either? Eg Elizabeth / Liz / Betty // Mattheo - Matty / Tayo

Very short names can work well across cultures. Also names that end in a vowel sound can be easier to pronounce across languages.

Eg for boys: Lee, Joe, Jesse, Milo

For girls: May, Maria, Tara
