Third trimester doubts

GEM429 · 04/08/2023 18:00

Hi all,

I’m really doubting myself in my choices for baby names.

We have picked William for a boy (after grandparent) but my worry is that DH’s name is Phil. Will Phil and Will sound stupid when talking about father and son?

We have picked Autumn Olivia for a girl (due in Sept) but again, doubting myself!

Not sure if it’s just hormones getting the better of me?!

Any help/advice would be greatest appreciated.

Thanks,
Gemma

Lovely names. Stick with them.

DustyLee123 · 04/08/2023 18:39

Phil and Will is fine, but use William as a middle name if you’re not sure.
Autumn is lovely. What would you shorten it to ?

GEM429 · 04/08/2023 18:48

Thank you both!

I hadn’t really thought about a nickname for Autumn. I suppose a silly one would evolve naturally within the family and then whatever happens at school will happen…!

Phil and Will are fine. Not keen on Autumn but maybe I'm a bit conservative. Use William at home, or maybe you could shorten it to Liam.

I think third trimester doubts are quite common. My best friend had the same in both her pregnancies. For the first she stuck with the original name and hasn’t regretted it once (child is now 3). For the second she changed the name but that was only because they found one they liked more, she also hasn’t regretted that. So I’d say unless there’s another name you prefer I’d stick with your original ones. I think your names are lovely for what it’s worth.

I love Autumn Olivia.
I love William and if it is like Phil, that's fine.
William Philip is too much though.

Other options ..
Walter William
Wilfred
Wilbur
Peter William
David William
Bruce William

William and Phil seem fine to me. If you want to distinguish further, go for Liam not Will as a diminutive.

I love Autumn, what a beautiful name.

KirstenBlest · 06/08/2023 13:20

William could be Billy.

continentallentil · 07/08/2023 10:20

Wouldn’t worry about Phil and Will

I’m not a fan of Autumn personally - although ok as a middle name

faban · 07/08/2023 14:02

Autumn Olivia is beautiful! Dw abiut phill will it's fine

Theoldwoman · 07/08/2023 14:16

I love William, but wouldn’t use it with a Phil already. Sorry.

Autumn - no, but quite like Olivia.

BarbaraV · 07/08/2023 17:13

Danielle Lloyd has an Autumn and I think it sinks a bit odd this time of the year when she's sat in a pool eating ice cream and being called autumn. Probs just me Grin

midsomermurderess · 07/08/2023 17:48

Why would you shorten Autumn? It’s two, and the second one one is quite scant, syllables.

KirstenBlest · 07/08/2023 18:12

@midsomermurderess , because names tend to be shortened. Amy gets shortened to Ames, Ellie to Elle etc.

midsomermurderess · 07/08/2023 19:01

But there is no obvious shortening for Autumn, just as there is no need. I think it's a bit strange to ask, straight off the bat, how will you shorten it? Almost as if it's a necessity.

Mojodojocasahaus · 07/08/2023 19:02

What is the mumsnet obsession with nicknames. I have a classic two syllable name and it has never been shortened to anything.
Most people call other people by their names 🤷‍♀️

KirstenBlest · 07/08/2023 19:24

@midsomermurderess , maybe they think it will get shortened to Tum.

My name is a short one and it gets lengthened. Not the name, but something like Jill being called Jilly, Gill, Gillian, Jillian, Jilliana, Juliana, and some people insist they are right.

midsomermurderess · 07/08/2023 19:28

Names get shortened, lengthened. But do parents really think eg, let's call her Amy, and we'll shorten it to Ames? Most of those things arise organically.

KirstenBlest · 07/08/2023 19:32

Might be an idea to think about it. I like Phoebe but dislike Phoebs, for example.
Friend has an Antonia but hadn't thought that her DD'd get called Tonia/Toni.

Beachywave · 07/08/2023 22:04

Imagine you're talking about them in the future... "Phil and Will are out watching the football" - it does sound a bit silly. If you're dead set on William then I agree with PP and shorten to Liam.

What did you end up going with x

NoHeavenNoMore · 13/10/2023 19:24

@GEM429 x

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 15/10/2023 15:16

William is great. No issue with Phil (imo).

Autumn is not my cup of tea but there is nothing objectively wrong with it. And a nickname will develop organically (if needed).

I absolutely adore your name, btw. Gemma is such a lovely, gorgeous name!

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 15/10/2023 15:17

ooh, older thread. What did you end up choosing?
