Thoughts on Louis as a brother for Ben(jamin)?
Other thoughts are Ezra but worried a bit too trendy...

I like Louis, wouldn't say it goes with Benjamin though, but that hardly matters

Interesting, not too clashy are they?

They're fine. Ben & Louis. No more clashy than George and Louis.

waterdroprooftopz · 01/08/2023 14:28

Armstrong springs to mind, I love it

RosesAndHellebores · 01/08/2023 14:35

The correct pronunciation of Louis is Looee. Loowiss or looiss is incorrect and I would inwardly judge.

Lewis is pronounced loowiss

Ben and Louis are good partners.

DappledThings · 01/08/2023 14:41

I don't think I've e ever heard it pronounced like hew either. Even Huey, Dewey and Louie don't have the first syllable rhyme. Huey and Dewey rhyme, Louie doesn't so I agree there are only 2 possible ways of saying it.

And I would always say Lou-ee. Anyone spelling it Louis and pronouncing it Lewis makes me cringe.

DuchessOfSausage · 01/08/2023 15:24

@RosesAndHellebores , Louis can be pronounced as Louie or Lewis. It's usually pronounced Louie in the UK.

@DappledThings , Huey, Dewey and Louie all rhyme in some accents. They say Doo-y, Hoo-y and Loo-y.

Louis written as Louie makes me cringe

RosesAndHellebores · 01/08/2023 15:40

@DuchessOfSausage by whom and where is it pronounced Loowiss. It's akin to pronouncing Juergen with a J rather than a Y. Or spelling Siobahn as Shivawn.

DappledThings · 01/08/2023 17:30

True. But nobody is saying Hewey, Dewey and Lewey to all rhyme with hew and pew.

Chocolatesandroses · 01/08/2023 17:31

I love Louis pronounced loo ee

DuchessOfSausage · 01/08/2023 17:33

Louis Armstrong said his name as Lewis. St Louis is said as Saint Lewis.

It's not like Juergen/Jurgen said with a J, as that's not how you say it in any language, or Siobhan written as Shivawn.

It's more like Clara said as Clara or Claira, or Maria said as Maria or Mariah.

DuchessOfSausage · 01/08/2023 17:36

@DappledThings , I say hew and pew like Hugh and Pugh. I wouldn't say Louis to rhyme with Hughie.

Exactly. I'm agreeing with you!

DuchessOfSausage · 02/08/2023 09:01

Good. I'd be a bit Hmm at parents who insisted that their Louis was a Loo-iss. Why not just use the perfectly fine Lewis.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 02/08/2023 09:26

Louis pronounced loo-iss is correct in much of Europe - it is the Germanic pronunciation - and is not necessarily the shibboleth for slightly dim parents that some MNers think it is.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/08/2023 10:04

I'm not sure how popular the name is in most of Europe, and given that it's a name from French origin and currently very popular, possibly because of Prince Louis, the Louie pronunciation is probably used far more often.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 02/08/2023 10:17

It's the 11th most popular boys' name in Germany so fairly popular.

Louis is not that popular in E&W. It has had a slight bump since the birth of the prince and currently sits at #50. The spelling Louie is slightly more popular, at #41.

I don't dispute that the French pronunciation of Louis is the more usual in the UK and it's the one I use if sight-reading a register. I am simply offering a reminder that the Loo-iss pronunciation doesn't necessarily deserve an eye-roll.

I quite enjoy the irony of this poster choosing Juergen as one of their examples when the Loo-iss pronunciation is German, as explained by a pp.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/08/2023 10:24

@YippieKayakOtherBuckets , another poster (@RosesAndHellebores ) had used it, and I used it in reply. I know 2 Jürgens and they say the name differently - they are from different countries. Neither of them are wrong. I try to use their pronunciation not say Yuh-gun.

I know. I did not quote you. I think you have missed the point that I was making.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/08/2023 10:55

Oh, yes, sorry.
My DC are David and Anne and we have to correct people who mistakenly say Day-vid and Ann. Wink

@ZoyaTheDestroyer , I think if you combined the figures for Louie and Louis, it would be about #12. Evie isn't particularly popular at #24 but it doesn't factor in that they may have been registered as Eve/Evelyn/Ev.... Ellie is #78.

belge2 · 02/08/2023 10:57

I have a Louis (Louee) as in French name. Hate Lou is !!
